This #NAIDOC Week, we’re recognising the importance of listening, learning and working alongside community.   Deakin Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research's Tanya Druce, a Research Fellow in Aboriginal Health and proud Wiradjuri woman, is partnering with Aboriginal peoples to co-design a culturally tailored health intervention program that supports type 2 diabetes (T2D) self-management through shared decision-making.   In Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are four times more likely to die from T2D or experience serious T2D-related disease than non-Indigenous Australians. The research highlights the importance of tailoring communication, using strengths-based approaches and ensuring health information reflects community voices and ways of knowing.   ‘Throughout the co-design workshops, we respected, protected and maintained Indigenous knowledge, practices and innovations to ensure a culturally safe project for our participants. 🤔 What does online gambling marketing actually look like in a young person’s social media feed in Australia? The images below were captured from a 16-year-old participant in our #DigitalYouth study. Based on their recorded screen time, they were exposed to an estimated NINE gambling marketing instances per hour online. ‼️In our total sample, using our AI-enabled system, SCANNER, we found that half of 13–17-year-old participants (and two-thirds of 18-25 year-olds) encountered at least one gambling marketing exposure in a 20-60minute screen recording. 🤬 Australia’s proposed online gambling reforms are unlikely to curb much of this exposure!
