Vale Isaac Wakil AO It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Isaac Wakil AO, one of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Sydney’s most generous philanthropists. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and community. Born in Baghdad and later making Australia his home, Isaac Wakil lived a life shaped by adventure, quiet determination, compassion, a profound love of art and a deep devotion to family. Together with his late, beloved wife Susan, he built not only a rich and colourful life, but also a philanthropic legacy of extraordinary scale and enduring significance. The Susan and Isaac Wakil Foundation was established in 2014, supporting a wide range of causes, including health and medical research at the University of Sydney and St Vincent’s Hospital, the arts through the Art Gallery, Opera Australia, the Sydney Jewish Museum, as well as educational scholarships. Isaac and Susan believed that art and beauty were for everyone. Through the Foundation, that belief found lasting expression in the Art Gallery’s transformation project. The Susan Wakil Pavilion and the Isaac Wakil Gallery sit at the heart of Naala Badu as spaces of light and openness, created for the people of NSW, now and into the future. Their philanthropy extended deeply into medical research and the support of healthcare workers, shaped in part by Susan’s long experience living with Parkinson’s disease. They made groundbreaking gifts to the University of Sydney’s School of Nursing and Midwifery and the Sydney Biomedical Accelerator, helping to catalyse further principal support and some of the most profound philanthropy seen in Australia. We remember Isaac’s generosity, his warmth and laughter, his clarity, and the depth of his love for Susan, for his family, and for the city in which their lives flourished. What Isaac and Susan began will endure, shaping our cultural life for generations to come. At the Art Gallery of New South Wales, some of our youngest visitors are stepping into the gallery as ‘Super Art Heroes.’ Recently featured by ABC News, our Super Art Heroes program introduces preschool and early learners to art through storytelling, role-play and movement, creating playful and accessible ways to connect with creativity. As the ABC story explores, early encounters with art can shape lifelong relationships with culture, storytelling and creative thinking. It’s a reminder of the important role cultural institutions play in supporting the next generation of thinkers, makers and storytellers. The Art Gallery of New South Wales has received a significant gift of Australian art from the notable private art collection of the late influential Sydney broadcaster John Laws CBE and his wife Caroline Laws. Now part of the Art Gallery’s permanent collection, the gift consists of 10 important works of art, thoughtfully collected over several decades and long displayed in the couple’s home. It includes four paintings by John Russell, the only Australian painter closely associated with leading late 19th-century French artists, including Auguste Rodin, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh and Henri Matisse, as well as two important paintings by Rupert Bunny – one of the most successful Australian expatriate artists of his generation. The collection also includes work by under-represented women artists: a watercolour of the newly completed Sydney Harbour Bridge by Adelaide painter Gwen Barringer, and an intimate oil study of gum blossoms by Jane Price, one of only three women affiliated with the Heidelberg School of Australian impressionist painters in the 1880s. Rounding out the gift are two striking landscapes: a major watercolour of England’s Lake District by John Glover, and a drawing of the Fish River by Brett Whiteley, created while the artist was staying at the Laws’ Oberon property in 1979. Several key works by Russell and Bunny were previously lent to the Art Gallery for major exhibitions – John Russell: Australia’s French Impressionist (2018) and Rupert Bunny: Artist in Paris (2009–10) – establishing a longstanding relationship that culminates in this gift. Art Gallery of New South Wales Director of Collections and Exhibitions Wayne Tunnicliffe said: ‘We are deeply grateful to the estate of John and Caroline Laws for this significant and generous gift. These three prestigious awards celebrate excellence and bold expression in portraiture, landscape and subject painting, recognising outstanding talent in contemporary Australian art. 🖼️ Archibald Prize 2026 Winner: Richard Lewer,for depicting Iluwanti Ken, a Pitjantjatjara Elder, senior artist and ngangkari (traditional healer). 🖼️ Wynne Prize 2026 Winner: Gaypalani Waṉambi, for her painting ‘The Waṉambi tree’. A first-time Wynne finalist, Gaypalani Waṉambi’s large-scale double-sided work details the artist’s songlines of the Marakulu clan and the ancestral honey hunter, Wuyal, with intricate markings of the life cycle of bees, honey and stringybark blossom found in her homeland in the Northern Territory.   🖼️ Sulman Prize 2026 Winner: Lucy Culliton, for her work ‘Toolah, artist model’. A seven-time #SulmanPrize finalist, the artist said “This is Toolah. She is one of seven greyhounds (nine dogs in total, all rescued) who live with me at Bibbenluke in the Snowy Monaro region of NSW.
