Runner Up of NSW Government 'Pedestrian Safety' Data Science Hackathon (+ Most collaborative award)
DAC (Data Analytics Centre) - NSW Government
The objective of this hackathon problem was to help the NSW government utilise their pedestrian safety data (including incidents, insurance claims and other data sources) to help with the broad theme of pedestrian safety. The focus was on pedestrian-vehicle interactions.
Of 35 teams participating, our team placed 2nd overall.
We also were awarded the 'Most collaborative team' award by the Atlassian mentors at the event.
Our team created a system whereby we generated safety…The objective of this hackathon problem was to help the NSW government utilise their pedestrian safety data (including incidents, insurance claims and other data sources) to help with the broad theme of pedestrian safety. The focus was on pedestrian-vehicle interactions.
Of 35 teams participating, our team placed 2nd overall.
We also were awarded the 'Most collaborative team' award by the Atlassian mentors at the event.
Our team created a system whereby we generated safety ratings for different geographically bound areas and fed this into a consumer-facing product. It was fundamental to our solution that the insights generated by our modelling were able to be accessed by the community. The app was one such avenue for this, though we proposed the creation of partnerships with elderly communities as well given that they are over-represented in more serious injury cases.
Throughout the weekend we utilised a variety of data science tools including visualisation, R, Python, Microsoft Azure and AWS instances to achieved our result.

The objective of this hackathon problem was to help NewCrest predict (and thus prevent) 'Surge' events in their SAG mill at their Cadia Mine operations. Prior to this hackathon, they were unsure why these events happened and hence provided data from the upstream systems for teams to inspect and build predictive models on.
Of 19 teams comprising data scientists, mathematicians, developers and industry professionals, our team placed 2nd overall.

Our team created a human-centric approach to solving this problem . We proposed two different machine learning models as well as the architecture to implement it, however at the crux of the solution was a human agent (which could be a representative of the whole team, not just one human) that took insights from each model, fed into the other model and continuously validated and engaged with the domain experts to leverage off them to help improve the system.
Throughout the weekend we utilised a variety of data science tools including visualisation, R, Python and AWS instances to achieved our result.
