2.5+ years ago, Howard Litwak, CBC spoke about AI on this podcast. Here's what we said, what's still true, and where we completely missed the mark.
🤯 2023 AI Takeaways from the Experts: Augment, Refine, & Master the Prompt!
What we thought:
1. AI is a Second Brain (Not a Replacement): Use AI to boost productivity and efficiency, making you better, faster, and smarter. It won't replace your job; people who use AI effectively will replace those who don't.
Today's reality:
Pretty spot on, but we didn't predict the speed at which AI has impacted the business world. It is replacing jobs, but everyone reading this post has the ability to not only save their career but also become the very best at what they do.
What we thought:
2. Refine, Don't Shortcut: Never post raw AI output. Use it for ideation, research, and improving your own drafts (copy, emails, social posts). Your brain is still better for quality control.
Today's reality:
Never shortcut; the human is still the ghost in the machine.
We never anticipated how many people would welcome AI handling their tasks. 80% of your inbox is AI, 90% of social media posts are AI (insert em dash), and websites are now flooded with AI-generated content.
What we thought:
3. Master the Prompt: To get high-quality results, be specific and put the AI in character ("You're a Harvard MBA marketing expert for a Fortune 500"). Poor prompts yield poor results.
Today's reality:
Yes... AND... prompting was just the tip of the iceberg. Today, you need to be an expert on prompts, custom GPTs, agents, tools*/technology and more.
* I'm not a fan of tool gypsies; I prefer the 'team approach' of experts who understand the world and can evaluate the risks and benefits of the AI tool stack. Tools come and go, but a strong team builds an entire ecosystem that uses the best set of tools until something better comes along.
What we thought:
4. Beware the Risks: Avoid using proprietary client data (violates NDAs) and understand that AI can "hallucinate" (make things up). Don't try to fool Google; auto-generated content can damage your ranking.
Today's reality:
No one listened 😏
The reality is, people violate NDAs daily; you've seen AI platforms accidentally leak information that shows this. Don't trust the AI output; however, with the proper AI training, AI is getting really good at deep learning. AI-generated content does NOT statistically perform as well. There have been hundreds of studies, and you're seeing AI-written trackers pop up everywhere, from teachers analyzing students' work to SEO teams monitoring the impact of inauthentic content. If you had AI build you a website, you should re-read that last sentence.
A big thank you to Michael R. Nelson and Buying Local for having us on the show.
It's been fun to look back and see where we completely missed the mark!
