Megha Bajaj, Business Development and Intellectual Property Lead at GIFS delivered an outstanding Intellectual Property Workshop for graduate students in the CREATE (Collaborative Research and Training Experience) program on March 12th at the University of Saskatchewan. By bringing her expertise in IP management and technology transfer to the classroom, Megha helped to showcase what it means for the future of innovation in agriculture. The objective of the CREATE program in Computational Ag is to train the next generation of researchers at the exciting intersection of Computer Science and Plant Sciences. The program is led by Dr. Ian Stavness and Dr. Lingling Jin at the University of Saskatchewan. Thursday’s session covered foundational concepts in intellectual property, types of IP as well as interactive IP-focused exercises that challenged the students to apply IP principles to real-world innovation scenarios A huge thank you to Megha for sharing her insights and making complex IP topics accessible and engaging! #Innovation #USASK #USaskResearch #IntellectualProperty

Engineering biology holds immense potential to transform numerous sectors, including agri-food. During a later panel discussion, we explored this potential and how we can address technical, regulatory, and scale-up challenges — accelerating the path to real-world impact. Daryl Harrison, Saskatchewan's Minister of Agriculture, as well as MLA James Thorsteinson, Legislative Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture, and the team from the Ministry for the great conversation. We were excited to share updates on the advancement of our initiatives, including breeding acceleration and at-scale sequencing and bioinformatics. The group also visited our Engineering Biology Platform, which is the only one of its kind in Canada dedicated to supporting agriculture and agri-food research. Agriculture has an important part to play in reducing the impact of climate change, and a 2022 study commissioned by the Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) shows that the widespread adoption of agricultural innovations by Canadian producers have given the country a competitive edge. When it comes to the five crops the study analyzed, Western Canada, and in most cases Canada as a whole, generates significantly less soil carbon per tonne of crop produced than our competitors around the world. Following a comprehensive and competitive executive search process, Dr. Jason Reinheimer has been appointed as the next Chief Executive Officer of GIFS. Jason will officially join GIFS on June 15, 2026. Jason brings more than two decades of international experience in crop improvement, breeding strategy, and large‑scale R&D leadership across Europe, Australia, and North America. His background spans applied plant breeding, research portfolio leadership, and the successful commercialization of agricultural innovations—experience that aligns strongly with GIFS’ mission to discover, develop and deliver solutions for sustainable food security. Gemeinsam mit Andreas Vilcinskas, Constantin Haefner sowie Vertreter*innen der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen und der Politik wurde deutlich, welches Potenzial in innovativen Ansätzen für eine nachhaltigere Landwirtschaft steckt. Besonders beeindruckend: - Fortschritte im RNAi-basierten Pflanzenschutz – inklusive eines bereits zugelassenen Sprays gegen den Kartoffelkäfer - Insekten als nachhaltige Proteinquelle und Baustein geschlossener Nährstoffkreisläufe - Innovative Ansätze, um Tierversuche zu reduzieren und gleichzeitig neue biomedizinische Erkenntnisse zu gewinnen Auch die Ausgründungen aus dem Institut haben gezeigt, wie aus Forschung echte Innovationen werden – von nachhaltigem Tierfutter bis hin zu Hightech-Anwendungen mit Insekten. Im Fokus: RNAi-basierter Pflanzenschutz und Insekten als Ressource für Ernährung, Dünger und Hightech. 🚀 Gemeinsam mit unserem Institutsteilleiter Prof. Dr. Andreas Vilcinskas, dem Vorstand Forschung & Transfer der Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft Prof. Dr. Constantin Haefner, den Vizepräsidenten der Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen Prof. Dr. Alexander Goesmann und Prof. Dr. Karsten Krüger sowie MdB Frederik Bouffier diskutierten wir, wie innovative Insektenbiotechnologie zu einer nachhaltigeren Landwirtschaft beitragen kann. 🌱 Im Zentrum stand unsere RNAi-Forschung: Doktorandin Leonie Graser präsentierte das weltweit erste zugelassene RNAi-Spray gegen den Kartoffelkäfer – Calantha® (Wirkstoff: Ledprona). Gemeinsam mit GreenLight Biosciences und der Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen konnten wir den Wirkmechanismus aufklären: Das Spray schaltet gezielt ein lebenswichtiges Gen des Kartoffelkäfers aus und eröffnet damit neue Wege für präzisen, umweltverträglichen Pflanzenschutz. 🥔🧬 Im Hochsicherheitslabor gab Nachwuchsgruppenleiterin Dr. Kornelia Hardes Einblicke in neue Wirkstoffe gegen Virusinfektionen sowie in innovative, umweltfreundliche Strategien zur Bekämpfung invasiver Stechmücken wie der Tigermücke, welche Dengue-, Gelbfieber- und Zika-Viren überträgt. 🦟 Beim Rundgang durchs Atrium zeigte Nachwuchsgruppenleiterin Dr. Dorothee Tegtmeier, wie sich Insektenlarven als nachhaltige Proteinquelle für die Aquakultur nutzen lassen und gleichzeitig klimafreundlicher Dünger aus organischen Reststoffen ensteht. So werden Nährstoffkreisläufe geschlossen und Alternativen zu rohstoffintensiven chemischen Düngern geschaffen. 🐛♻️ Über eine Virtual-Reality-Brille ließ Dr. Anton G. Windfelder die Anatomie des Tabakschwärmers erkunden. Steven Webb liked thisSteven Webb liked thisPlus tôt cette semaine à Regina, je me suis jointe à Tracey Bodnarchuk, Tessa Ritter, Dara Hrytzak et Amber Biemans K.C., ICD.D. pour participer à un groupe de discussion à l’occasion du salon Canada’s Farm Show. Le groupe de discussion était animé par Tina Beaudry et portait sur les conditions nécessaires pour que le Canada réalise pleinement son potentiel en tant que superpuissance agricole et énergétique. Nous avons abordé les défis auxquels le secteur est actuellement confronté, qu'il s'agisse de l'incertitude commerciale, de la hausse des coûts ou des pressions persistantes sur la productivité. Nous avons également discuté des occasions à saisir ainsi que la manière dont l'innovation et l'investissement peuvent favoriser l'abordabilité, l’emploi et la compétitivité à long terme. Les perspectives exprimées lors des échanges illustraient l’évolution de l’agriculture canadienne. Au Canada, plus de 30 % des exploitations agricoles sont aujourd’hui gérées par des femmes, une proportion en hausse. Elles jouent un rôle clé dans la gestion des risques, le transfert d’exploitations agricoles et les décisions d’investissement, dans un contexte où près du tiers des agriculteurs et agricultrices devraient quitter le secteur d'ici 2030. Les échanges ont aussi porté sur les régions rurales du Canada, où la croissance prend forme sur le terrain, au sein des collectivités qui se développent, s’adaptent et se projettent dans l’avenir. Lorsque les politiques et les investissements sont en phase avec la réalité sur le terrain, la confiance s'installe et des perspectives s'ouvrent pour la prochaine génération.
