  • Asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, and cystic fibrosis have long been studied through the lens of host immunity alone, but that framing is incomplete. A new Research Topic in Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology turns attention to the airway microbiome as an active player in respiratory disease — one that shapes inflammation, exacerbation risk, and infection susceptibility, while itself being reshaped by the inflamed airway environment it inhabits. This matters because so much of what drives poor outcomes in chronic lung disease — recurrent exacerbations, secondary infections, unpredictable disease trajectories — remains hard to explain through immune signaling alone. Understanding how microbial communities and their products interact with epithelial cells, macrophages, dendritic cells, and lymphocytes at the airway mucosa could open new paths to patient stratification, biomarker discovery, and targeted therapies, particularly for patients who cycle through repeated infections despite standard treatment. Edited by Fan Xu (Research Center Borstel), Leizhi Shi (Linyi People’s Hospital), and Li Jia (Guangzhou Medical University), this Research Topic welcomes original research, reviews, mini-reviews, perspectives, and methodological papers that bring clinical, experimental, multi-omics, or computational approaches to this question.   • Every year, tuberculosis quietly slips past the people who can least afford to be missed: children. Pediatric TB isn’t a smaller version of adult disease - it’s a distinct, often hidden epidemic, and one we’re still not detecting, treating, or preventing well enough. Children present differently, our diagnostic tools still fail too many of them, and the evidence on shorter treatment regimens and drug-resistant TB in children remains thin and unevenly reachable. Every missed or delayed diagnosis is a child living with disease that could have been caught. That has to change. We’re thrilled to share that these are exactly the questions driving our new Research Topic in Frontiers in Tuberculosis: “Understanding Pediatric Tuberculosis: Current Challenges and Future Directions.” Our Topic Editors Dr. Manjula Datta (Prof. M. Viswanathan Diabetes Research Center, India), Prof. Valsan Verghese (Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore, India), and Prof. Heather Zar (University of Cape Town) are on a mission to bring together the evidence, expertise, and bold thinking this field urgently needs.   • Climate change is reshaping how vector-borne diseases like malaria, dengue, Zika, leishmaniasis, and Lyme disease spread — altering vector distribution, competence, and host contact patterns worldwide. The Research Topic "Vector-borne diseases and Transmission Dynamics in Changing Climates" is open for submissions and invites multidisciplinary research bridging molecular, ecological, and epidemiological perspectives to better understand vector-parasite interactions and transmission dynamics.   • Great news for researchers working on the vaginal microbiome and yeast infection biology: the submission deadline for our Research Topic, “Unveiling Archaeal Roles in Urogenital Microbiome: Implications for Yeast Infections,” in Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology has been extended to 30 November 2026. This gives authors more time to contribute to a collection that is opening up genuinely new territory in urogenital microbiology. Archaea remain one of the biggest blind spots in vaginal microbiome research, largely because standard sequencing methods were built around bacteria and often miss archaeal signal entirely. Yet recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis continues to affect huge numbers of people worldwide, and current bacteria-only models don’t fully explain why some individuals experience persistent, hard-to-treat infections. Bringing archaea into the picture, alongside bacteria and fungi, could reshape how we understand microbial balance in the urogenital tract and why that balance sometimes fails. We’re inviting original research, reviews, methods papers, and hypothesis pieces that explore archaeal diversity, interkingdom interactions, and their functional role in vaginal health and disease.
