Fourteen weeks. Seven startup teams. One mission: turning battery research into ventures. 🔋 The first Battery Venture Course (BVC) has wrapped up a strong example of the deep-tech venture-building model we run across our ecosystem. Our Battery Startup Incubator (BaStI), supported by the Chem / BioSystems and Climate / Circular Labs ♻️ , brought together researchers, engineers, entrepreneurs, investors, and industry experts from across Germany to support the next generation of battery founders. Pioneering research ideas became venture concepts through customer discovery, techno-economic analysis (TEA), market validation, business model development, and investor-ready pitches. At the final presentations, our seven teams showcased their progress, received feedback from an expert jury, and connected with leaders across the battery innovation ecosystem. Highlights included: ➡️ Presentation of Tesla's Cell Giga Challenge by Johann K. and Rafael Naß de Andrade, opening up opportunities for industry collaboration with startups building next-gen battery solutions. ➡️ A keynote on battery innovation and entrepreneurship from Prof. Dr. Jennifer Rupp, CTO of TUMint Energy GmbH and co-founder of Qkera ➡️ Live and actionable feedback from our expert jury from us and TUMint Energy, including Dr. Sabine Oldemeyer, Jennifer L.M. Rupp and Florian Lintl. Congratulations to our Cohort 1 teams 🎉: Anori Tech, ReduCO2, CeraLogic, Carbonalga, VoID, VEnU, and SpandaOne on their great pitches and successful completion of the program! Over 14 sessions, experts from academia, industry, #startups, and venture capital guided the teams through the full venture-building journey from battery fundamentals and team building to customer discovery, go-to-market #strategy, IP, fundraising, and scaling deep-tech ventures with #AI. Congratulations also to Dr. Saba Fazal Firdousi Adam (Program Manager: BaStI) who designed and delivered the inaugural Battery Venture Course from concept to execution. A thriving innovation ecosystem is built through deliberate, meaningful connections. One such partnership reflects this mission in practice: our collaboration with Sonceboz. Founded in 1936 and still family-owned today, Sonceboz has built a distinguished reputation as a Swiss leader in mechatronic drive systems, delivering precision-engineered motion solutions across the automotive, industrial, and medical sectors for nearly a century. For our Labs, this partnership plays out across two focus streams, #Robotics and #Mobility, where Sonceboz's precision engineering meets deep-tech research and founder-led innovation. Founders navigate an inherently demanding journey, one defined by experimentation, resilience, and continuous iteration. On July 30, we're bringing something special to our founders: a Founders Talk organized with our Food / Agro / Biotech Lab and with the help of Roman Bosl Werner (Managing Director), open to founders from all our labs, interested students, TUM members and leaders from our ecosystem. What does leadership look like when one wrong decision can become life threatening? And what does recovery look like when both body and mind are pushed to their limits? At this #Founders Talk, Felix Rosenberger (founder and CEO of RoWa-Solutions) shares insights on exactly these questions, and how they translate to the business context as a founder. Felix spent 14 years as a soldier in the German Armed Forces, around ten of them with the Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK) in Calw. There, he built experience in highly dynamic, high pressure contexts, where #leadership, decision making, self regulation, and team trust under pressure are immediately relevant. He deepened this experience with a solid background in emergency #medicine, training as a paramedic in the US. Through his psychology studies, with a focus on work, organizational, and business #psychology, he connects this practical experience with scientific insight into stress, emotion regulation, leadership, and performance. Today, Felix brings all of this together at RoWa, working at the intersection of psychological health, leadership, diagnostics, and organizational development, an approach shaped by real experience in high stakes #startups and organizations alike. Scaling deeptech hardware is tough. But our Future of Computing | Photonics 2026 conference showed that Europe has the scientific excellence, industrial expertise, and entrepreneurial ambition to turn photonics breakthroughs into real-world technologies. At our Quantum/Semicon lab, we work every day to close the gap between research and market and this event brought that mission to life. Together with Optica and Netlight, we welcomed more than 100 carefully selected founders, industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers from the #startup ecosystem to explore one key question: how can we turn integrated #photonics into #Europe's competitive advantage in the global hardware race, from lab to fab? 💡 Key insights from the stage: ➡️ Dr. Jose Pozo (Optica) opened the event, highlighting the rapid growth of integrated photonics and its increasing importance for future technologies and industries. ➡️ Prof. Martijn Heck (TU/e) offered a deep technical perspective on the opportunities and fundamental challenges ahead from photonic integration to scaling new architectures. ➡️ Dr. Ulrich S.(ams OSRAM) shared the story behind their Deutscher Zukunftspreis-winning project, illustrating the years of research, engineering, and industrial execution it takes to turn a breakthrough technology into a high-volume market solution. ➡️ Michael K. (Q.ANT) showed how photonic technologies can enable entirely new approaches to computing, and why light could become a key building block of future #AI systems. Our "Scaling Light" panel with Dr. Jose Pose, Anna Selzer, Flo Pattiwael, Michael Machold, and Marek Kotelnicki brought home a central message: bringing #innovation to market takes strong collaboration between researchers, founders, industry, investors, and policymakers. 🚀 From research to market: A highlight of the evening was our startup pitch session, featuring Linque, Akhetonics, Linq Photonics, strAilight, Ewigbyte, and MemStera. These teams showed the momentum behind European photonics innovation and how quickly emerging technologies are moving toward real-world application. "A startup is not a lifestyle." Our CEO, Philipp Gerbert, was the first guest on Dr. Luiza Avetisyan, PhD, PMP®'s "The Ecosystem Code podcast." And he is very direct about what amount of hard work and perseverance building a company actually requires ❗ On the other hand: in a well-functioning #ecosystem, the personal risk has also shifted. A failed startup used to mean five wasted years. Today, in the right environment, those years count double - also in the view of corporate recruiters later in life. The personal experience compounds irrespective of the ultimate success of the company. Philipp's take on ecosystems is just as confident. A longtime believer in hub-and-spoke over either decentral approaches or complete concentration, his philosophy is simple: build from anywhere, but connect to a hub with the infrastructure, capital, and talent density to match your ambition. It's why TUM Venture Labs supports many #startups across Germany, Austria, Switzerland and more, but also invests in deliberate ties to the strongest global hubs in each field. MIT and Stanford for climate tech and biotech , the Netherlands for semiconductors, quantum and food, Japan and New York/Boston for robotics, to make sure every local founder knows what is expected to become world class, but also builds the right connections from day one. The road ahead for Europe gest the same 'positive energy' - building on amazing talent and ecosystem support. Irrespective, a joint capital market, true common market for product and services and less regulation would help. Few people can speak to #AI's arc with this much authority. PhD from MIT, postdoc at UCLA, years leading digital transformation and AI work as a senior partner at BCG. Gerbert has been in this field since the 1980s, when AI meant playing chess. He watched its cycles of progress and hibernation for decades, to finally explode in 2012 and beyond. His advice for anyone starting out: "Go after knowledge. Go after technical skills. We're organizing a semiconductor hackathon with SEMICON Europa. 🔬 For 72 hours, participants will work on site at the SEMICON Europa exhibition floor, alongside the companies, researchers, and executives who make up Europe's #semiconductor industry. Teams can choose to work on problems in promising industry tracks: ➡️ Chip architecture and integration ➡️Smart manufacturing and sustainable fab ➡️Quality, testing and reliability ➡️Supply chain resilience and transparency ➡️Quantum-ready semiconductor technologies Each of these reflects a real challenge the industry is currently working through, and participants will have direct access to people from companies dealing with these problems day to day. 🌐Deepening the TUM–Boston Partnership The future of climate and energy entrepreneurship education is being built together, not apart. From June 15–18, the team traded Munich for Cambridge & Woods Hole, immersing in conversations that are reshaping how the transatlantic startup #ecosystem collaborates. This included an active involvement in the University Climate & Energy Ventures (UCEV) Summit, alongside 29 institutions and 60 participants from around the world. 💡The UCEV Summit marks a shift from isolated programs to a coordinated global movement in climate and energy entrepreneurship education. The value for early stage #startups is clear: a clearer path from research to venture, stronger founder capability, and earlier access to global partners and infrastructure - the kind of cross-continental collaboration that keeps the whole #climatetech innovation ecosystem moving forward. For the ecosystem, this means: → The Climate/ Circular Lab is deepening exchanges in program design, #AI tools, and mentorship with UCEV institutions, Recursion Works, The Engine, Harvard Innovation Labs and MIT Climate Project / MIT MECHE, growing a lasting transatlantic #founders network. 🙏 Great exchanges throughout the trip with Deepa Rao, PhD (The Engine), Rebekah Emanuel (Harvard i-lab), Michela Grunebaum (Greentown Labs), Liana Frey & Brent Ridley (MIT Climate Project), and Ryan M. Who will feed us tomorrow? 🌱 The AgriFood Landscape DACH is out now: a new map of the key B2B players across the entire value chain, from seeds and farming to packaging and side-stream valorisation. It was developed by AgriFoodHub, which we support through our Food / Agro / Biotech lab, together with Food Campus Berlin. The mapping draws on more than 600 actors, analysed with UnternehmerTUM's AI-supported classification model. What stands out: → Cross-border by nature: two out of three #startups are based in Germany, but Austria and Switzerland have strong champions and untapped collaboration potential. → Battle-tested founders: the founding wave peaked between 2019 and 2021, meaning today's players have weathered the venture downturn and are ready for serious industry partnerships. → An open door in side-streams: the busiest startup segment, yet only nine established companies operate there, a clear opportunity for corporate collaboration in #foodinnovation. This was made possible through a great cooperation with Wirtschaftskammer Österreich and Swiss Food & Nutrition Valley.
