Most migration stories start with the architecture. The real ones start with the question nobody wants to answer: is this actually going to be worth it? We just wrapped our live session with GetYourGuide and Databricks - and if you missed it, here are the key things. 👉 Together with Databricks, we at DATAPAO supported GetYourGuide end-to-end - from the initial proof of value through to full migration - helping them move their Looker BI workloads from Snowflake to Databricks SQL. Migration is never just a technical project. As Marcell Nemeth (Datapao) put it: "You're flying the plane while rebuilding it - with the same crew." The business keeps running. Dashboards keep rendering. Finance reports still need to land on Monday morning. So the real question isn't "should we migrate?" - it's "how do we do it without breaking trust?" Here's what GetYourGuide actually did: 💠 Started with a proof of value (not just a PoC) - selecting their hardest use case first and agreeing on KPIs with stakeholders before writing a single line of migration code 💠 Used the Looker SDK to programmatically compare query execution times between Snowflake and Databricks SQL - averaged over 5 runs, with result cache disabled, to get genuinely comparable numbers 💠 Built a continuous validation loop: every table migrated, tested, validated against the source before moving on 💠 Ran parallel workstreams - Datapao delivered a reference implementation, GetYourGuide scaled from there 💠Completed ~750 tables and 20K+ SQL queries in ~4.5 months, with minimal disruption The results? • 20% reduction in operational costs • Reports delivered 1.5 hours earlier • BI and data processing unified on a single platform • And after the BI migration - they went further: moved their transformation layer to DBT on Databricks SQL Serverless, another 20% cost reduction + 60% SLA improvement The biggest mindset shift from Robert Bemmann (GetYourGuide): once you see the performance of serverless SQL warehouses, people get "greedy" - in the best possible way.
