This was no easy feat as I went through a year of rigorous classes and exercises, assignments, projects and the capstone dissertation. They are just job descriptions and most of the time you are only going to be tasked with using 2 or 3 of the tools listed in them when working on the actual job. When I talk to Data Analytics newbies I always advice they are conversant with 2-3 prominent tools in the job description. The rest, do a brief research on them to know what they actually do. A 10-minute youtube tutorial can literally fix this. Please note that I do not say don't know as much tools or skills as possible. It is always imperative to upskill and learn new tools and technologies in the career market. All I am saying is don't see a job description and run off with the idea that 'you are not ready for this job' or 'you are not skilled enough'. A lot of the time, you are ready. Oyeniyi Olaniyi liked thisOyeniyi Olaniyi liked thisAfter 3 years of trying to get a software engineering role in the UK from Nigeria, I was encouraged by my family to enrol for a MSc. I looked through the list of schools still taking applications and University of Leicester stood out. I missed the first 2 weeks of lectures and arrived on the last day of registration due to late visa application. Then, I missed an additional 2-3 days getting accommodation sorted out. This made the first couple of lectures and lab sessions difficult to follow. During my first lab session, everyone seemed to know what they were doing, while I struggled to set up my lab virtual machine. As I walked around the lab to find someone that could help me out, Steve Dsouza noticed I looked lost and asked: "Are you okay" in a friendly Indian accent (I was not okay, lol). He helped me set up my lab machine, gave me a short orientation of where to find things I needed, and introduced me to his group of friends. Fast forward to a year and a half later, I am pleased to announce that I graduated as the best student in all Computer Science MSc Programmes at the University of Leicester with a distinction in Advanced Software Engineering. I will also be returning to Amazon as a Software Development Engineer at Amazon Prime Video after a successful summer internship last year. If you are uncertain about returning to university after starting your career, or trying to get a tech role in UK, as my family encouraged me, I also encourage you to enrol for a masters. p.s. If you decide to enrol for a masters in the Uk, University of Leicester is a great choice!
