Researchers identified 25 plant-based anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing ingredients for sustainable cosmetics 🌿🧴 🔬 Extracts such as cell cultures of basil and tropical pepper can be produced from responsibly grown plants or agricultural side streams, turning waste into high-value, sustainable solutions. 🔬 Carried out together with 16 partners from 11 European countries, the VTT-led project represents the most comprehensive scientific exploration of plant-based cosmetic ingredients to date. One of our proud highlights from last year was when a satellite equipped with VTT’s tech completed its four-year mission in Earth’s orbit 👏🛰️ 🌌 The Finnish-built W-Cube nanosatellite, equipped with VTT’s radio beacon, proved for the first time that high 75 GHz frequencies can work in space. 📱 "This opens possibilities for bringing faster data connections to consumers, even directly to their smartphones," said VTT's Jussi Säily. These frequencies are also harder to disrupt than ground-based networks, making communications more reliable in the future. Finland could host the Nordics’ first fusion reactor 🌍 Here’s what that means: ☀️ Fusion creates energy by merging light atomic nuclei, the same reaction that powers the sun. It could one day produce large amounts of energy without carbon emissions. 👨🔬 So far, fusion has stayed in laboratories. The next step is a pilot reactor. A pilot does not produce electricity for the grid but tests whether fusion can work reliably at industrial scale. 🏭 A report by VTT finds Finland is the most suitable Nordic country to host such a pilot. Finland’s key advantage is regulation, with the Nuclear Energy Act being renewed to treat fusion separately from conventional nuclear power. 📍 The pilot would be built by Novatron Fusion Group AB on an industrial site in the Helsinki region. 🔎 Commercial fusion power is still years away. But early pilots build expertise and industry, giving Finland a chance to shape fusion’s future rather than follow it. A plastic bucket from old clothes? 🪣 ♻️ VTT's pilot machine transforms textile waste into raw material for buckets, garden furniture and even wind turbine blades and vehicle sound insulation. 👕 It melts synthetic fibres, from workwear, sportswear or home textiles, and turns them into pellets that can be used just like plastic. 👖 Textile recycling is a major opportunity for Europe. Around 10 billion kilos of textiles are discarded each year, yet only about 1% is recycled back into textiles. The technology exists, but complex materials and slow regulation are holding back progress. 👕 What if we could test and optimise sustainable textile production virtually before running physical trials? 🧵 The BioFibreLoop project has reached an exciting milestone with the development of the first functional Digital Twin for laser-based functionalisation of textiles. The new virtual modelling framework helps researchers and industry partners better understand how material and process parameters influence the final textile properties. ❓ Why does this matter? 🧵 By simulating embossing conditions such as temperature, pressure and material characteristics, the Digital Twin can help identify promising process settings before extensive physical testing is needed. This can reduce development time, save resources and support more sustainable innovation pathways. The development marks an important step towards BioFibreLoop's broader ambition: creating bio-based, recyclable and non-toxic functional textiles that reduce dependence on hazardous chemicals while maintaining high-performance properties. We’ve all had meetings that could’ve been an email 😅 📊 VTT, Helvar and Framery have developed a smart meeting room that uses AI, sensors and behavioural analytics to sense when meetings aren’t working. 👁️ The technology tracks attention, activity, eye contact, posture, device use and how light, sound and air affect meetings. 📅 "When we identify ineffective meetings early, we can improve both the meaningfulness of workdays and organisational productivity," explains VTT’s Johannes Peltola. 🧑🤝🧑 "Privacy is maintained because we don't collect data at the individual level but analyse the group as a whole," he adds. But VTT’s Markus Nikinmaa has shown there’s another way. 🔬 By selecting the right oat flours, applying bioprocessing to bran, and using extrusion technology, his research demonstrates that fibre-rich snacks can stay both light and crispy, making healthy snacking more delicious. 💡 The work doesn’t just stay in the lab. An unexpected finding in the lab became a plant protein startup 🫘 👩🔬 At VTT, researchers working on new snack products noticed something unexpected. Under certain conditions, the extrusion process produced material with high protein concentrations. 🫛 That finding became the foundation of Happy Plant Protein, a VTT startup founded in 2024. The company has now patented the extrusion technology, which turns locally grown raw materials such as oats and peas into plant protein using existing production lines, without heavy investment. 🏭 Next, Happy Plant Protein is moving into industrial production, starting with its first facility in Latvia, where production is scheduled to begin in 2027.
