India's SHG network is now the largest community institution of its kind in the world. It is run entirely by women. In Maharashtra, over 60 lakh families are now part of self-help groups generating their own income. In Palghar district alone, SHGs are active across food processing, tailoring, farming, fisheries, dairy, and handicrafts built entirely by women. These are self-help groups. And this is what they actually do: - Pool small savings together regularly - Access credit as a group, with repayment accountability built in - Build businesses in farming, food processing, tailoring, and local services - Create economic activity that stays within the community Across India, there are over 90 lakh such groups covering more than 10 crore women under DAY-NRLM. The loan repayment rate across these groups is better than that of most corporate borrowers. I have seen this firsthand through our Avni Wellness Sakhi network. The women we work with in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand are school teachers, salon owners, and local vendors. They sell, educate, and earn. And when you actually sit with them, what strikes you is not just the income they are generating. It is the confidence. Women who once asked for permission to make a small purchase are now running accounts, placing orders, and training others. This is not at all charity. A disposable pad stays in place using an adhesive strip and a prayer. And most of us have just… accepted that. The adjusting mid-commute. The checking every hour. The quiet anxiety on a heavy day.
