Most of my Client companies are asking me the same question: “𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙙𝙤 𝙬𝙚 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙖 2-𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧, 3-𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧, 5-𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙣 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙂𝙚𝙣 𝙕?” And my honest answer is — 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲. Let’s understand this through three generations. 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟭 – 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗿𝗮 🏭 Jobs were scarce. 𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭 came first. People stayed 25–30 years in one company because stability meant security. They worked from fear of losing income. 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟮 – 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗺 🧑💻 IT grew. Opportunities expanded. This generation worked for 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘦. Better car. Better house. Better pay. They stayed where compensation matched ambition. 𝙂𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 3 – 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙤𝙨𝙩-𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝘿𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙂𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 (𝙂𝙚𝙣 𝙕) 👨💼👩💼 They are not working just for money. They are not working just for class. They are working for 𝘘𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦. They evaluate: Company culture | Leadership authenticity | Work-life balance | Learning opportunities | Flexibility | Meaningful work If something doesn’t align — 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚. Not because they are disloyal. Not because they lack commitment. But because 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁. Basic needs were secured by the previous generations. Now the priority is 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵, 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲. You cannot “lock” them with a 3-year retention strategy. You retain them by: • 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 • 𝗣𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 • 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 • 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 • 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 This is a digitally aware generation.
