The Reserve Bank of India has issued draft guidelines to crack down on mis-selling and deceptive “dark patterns” by banks, proposing strict norms from July 1, 2026. Under the new framework, banks must obtain explicit customer consent, avoid forced bundling, ensure transparent marketing, and fully refund customers — along with compensation — if mis-selling is established. The move aims to protect consumer rights, curb aggressive cross-selling, and strengthen responsible banking practices across the financial system. The recent DoT SIM-binding mandate for messaging apps has stirred quite a storm across India’s tech ecosystem. On paper, it’s positioned as a move to strengthen traceability and reduce online fraud. But in practice, it could be a real disruption — forcing continuous SIM verification and even automatic logouts every few hours on web versions of apps like WhatsApp, Signal, or Telegram. As someone who’s worked in the compliance and risk space, I can see both sides. My Question is , will continuous SIM-binding genuinely stop cyber fraud, or just make life harder for legitimate users? Most fraudsters use quick-burn SIMs or identity mismatches, fake accounts. The intention is right, but the execution feels misaligned with how cybercrime actually operates today.
