On June 24, 2026, the RBI released the draft 'Guidance on Regulatory Principles for Model Risk Management', setting a new benchmark for how every regulated entity in India governs AI and analytical models,. Who does this impact? This comprehensive framework applies to the entire financial ecosystem,: * Banking: Commercial, Small Finance, Payments, Local Area, Regional Rural, and Co-operative Banks. * Institutions: All India Financial Institutions. * Non-Banking: NBFCs, Asset Reconstruction Companies (ARCs), and Credit Information Companies. Five Critical Mandates for Regulated Entities According to the draft, the days of "black box" models are over. Regulated entities will now be required to: 1. Implement a 'Kill Switch': The ability to instantly override or deactivate any AI model. 2. Ensure Human Oversight: Human-in-the-loop oversight must be documented and robust. 3. Mandatory Customer Disclosure: Customers must be informed whenever AI drives a decision affecting them. 4. Vendor Risk Management: Entities must actively manage risks stemming from third-party AI providers. 5. Board-Level Accountability: AI governance is no longer just a technical issue; it requires accountability at the Board level. What This Means in Practice For risk, compliance, and model governance teams, this draft changes the operational landscape: * Ownership: Every model requires a documented owner, moving beyond simple technical custodianship. * Contractual Shifts: Existing AI vendor contracts may need renegotiation to ensure they cover disclosure and override rights. * Compliance to Transparency: Customer-facing AI decisions now carry a formal disclosure obligation, shifting model risk from an internal compliance task to a public-facing responsibility. * Readiness Drills: Boards must now be prepared to answer the regulator's toughest question: "What would we shut down, and how fast?". The Road Ahead: The RBI is inviting public comments on this draft framework until July 24, 2026. My early years were spent building consumer brands: distribution battles, retail shelves, pricing psychology, and the endlessly fascinating question of why human beings choose one thing over another. One of our first ventures was a bubble gum brand. Unconventional. Instructive. I loved every minute of it. Then, almost accidentally, I found myself at Servion, sitting with exceptionally bright technologists building systems I often barely understood. The word ‘server’ to me was the guy who brought me the Dosa at Saravana Bhavan. And yet, something became visible to me over time. The technology industry in the early 2000s, especially in the SME segment, was filled with brilliant people solving extraordinarily difficult problems. But very few organisations were pausing long enough to ask the deeper questions. Who exactly are we building this for? Why should anyone care beyond the feature list? What remains when the technology itself becomes replaceable? These were never really marketing questions. They were questions of identity. Clarity. Meaning. A mentor once told me: "The only reason you survive in technology is because you brought positioning and strategy into a room full of engineers." Possibly the most accurate professional assessment I have ever received. Today, at Slingshot, we continue that same work with tech SMEs and startups navigating a world being reshaped by AI. And the irony is this: the more technology advances, the more important positioning becomes. Products get replicated and features converge because AI is accelerating all of it. But what remains? Culture. Clarity. Trust. Meaning. Good positioning shapes the demand you attract, the pricing power you command, the talent that chooses to stay, and the kind of institution you eventually become. The real question for every tech company today is no longer "How good is your technology?" It is this: when everyone has access to the same technology, what will make you matter?

Leading in the Digital World – Reflections from a Transformative session at IIMA I had the privilege of attending the session "Leading in the Digital World: How to Foster Creativity, Collaboration, and Inclusivity” by Prof. Amit Mukherjee at IIM Ahmedabad, organized under the aegis of the Ashank Desai Centre for Leadership and Organization Development. The central question posed was both powerful and unsettling: 👉 How will digital disruption fundamentally change the way leadership happens in organizations? This became the anchor for the session, and it reshaped how I see leadership in the digital era. 🔑 Key Reflections & Learnings 1. The Five Principles of Digital Leadership Deskilling & Upskilling: Automation erases some skills while demanding new ones. Cerebral Wave: The edge belongs to those who think, not just execute. Unpredictable Source Value: Breakthroughs can come from anywhere in the system. Radical Transparency: Openness is no longer optional—it’s foundational. 2. Christensen’s Lens – Balancing sustaining technologies (refining what exists) with disruptive technologies (reinventing the game). 3. From Productivity to Creativity – Leadership must shift from maximizing efficiency to enabling imagination and problem-solving. 4. T-shaped over I-shaped – Building professionals with deep expertise + broad collaborative capabilities. 5. Co-Creation of Value – Leaders as partners, not just directors. 6. Diversity as Growth Engine – Diversity fuels intellectual breakthroughs, not just representation. 7. Eliminating the ‘Language of Leadership Problem’ – Humanizing leadership communication so it unites and inspires. For me, the workshop was not just about frameworks—it was about embracing a new philosophy of leadership. In a digital-first world, leaders must become orchestrators of creativity, inclusivity, and collective intelligence. As a coach working with family businesses and corporates, these insights deeply align with what I see in practice: Growth is achieved through collaboration and co-creation, not control. Teams thrive when T-shaped talent and diverse perspectives are nurtured. The true shift is moving leaders from a productivity-first mindset to a creativity-first mindset. This is the very transformation I enable in organizations—helping leaders unlock not just business value but human potential.
