What won't change even with AI taking over the marketing function... I have seen the rapid evolution of digital marketing from working for one of India's first performance marketing agencies from 2006-09, working for a then humongous company like Yahoo, buying media from the now-forgotten sites like Rediff and Indiatimes. I have witnessed times where clients patiently waited for a good campaign and had respect for good copy. When creative directors made you slog through the night for that one headline which did the job. When designers and copywriters worked as a team and produced interesting work that came from deep understanding of the craft. I have hired a large team of content writers and edited, managed 20 content pieces a day. Worked with one week video production and editing cycles. Been writing on Linkedin when most of the junta just treated it like a job search platform, hardly anyone took the pain to write. And now? AI can easily replace the whole marketing team. We are usually the first to go. Which means, the responsibility of marketing is with people who are supposed to sell, build the product, run the company or maybe that solopreneur who does it all. Whatever the case may be - if you are entrusted with marketing your brand - there are some basics you cannot afford to neglect. 1. Stay as close to your customer as possible - talk to them, meet them, listen to them, build for them. This is the most common rookie mistake people make. What they tell you might hurt your ego, might ruin your product lineup. You might need to redo sales projections or even convince your board about the changes. But it will be worth it. I have heard founders giving Steve Jobs' eexample saying - the customers do not know what they want. Well, everyone is not Steve Jobs to be assuming that, isn't it? 2. The 'right value' always needs to be exchanged. Stop thinking, building, selling features. what value is it adding your buyer's life? Do they really consider it value? Are you undervaluing or overvaluing what you offer? Will you be able to give the value that your employees deserve for being the backbone of your business. Value also comes from solving the right problems - there is always space to solve for problems if you look for them closely. There are many more such points, I'm sure. Felt like sharing this during a looong cab ride stuck in traffic in Mumbai. If you find grammatical errors or typos, so be it! GTM for India’s consumer tech market is a different beast. And the sooner we accept that, the fewer mistakes we make. Everyone loves neat ICP slides. But the truth is, India refuses to behave like a homogenous market. It never has. And every founder who has built here eventually runs into the same realisation: India is not one ICP. It is a grid: X-axis = Age Y-axis = Tier And each cell behaves like a completely different market. If you look at any adoption data from India: 1. Tier 1 has ~60–70 percent digital payment penetration; Tier 3 still hovers around 20–30 percent. 2. Gen Z spends 2.5x more time on mobile gaming compared to 35+ audiences. 3. Average order value and trust in online purchases drop by almost 40 percent between Tier 1 and Tier 2, and by 60 percent when you hit Tier 3. 4. A Tier 1 user adopts new tech 2–3x faster than a Tier 3 user, even when exposed to the same product story. Same age. Same product. Same country. Completely different behaviours. And this is where Geoffrey Moore’s Crossing the Chasm becomes painfully real in India. In most countries, innovators and early adopters come from a predictable socio-economic band. In India, early adopters are scattered across age and tier but concentrated in very specific grid cells. 1. A 22-year-old in Tier 1 behaves like a global early adopter. 2. A 22-year-old in Tier 2 behaves like early majority. 3. A 40-year-old in Tier 3 might still be in the “late majority” even for mainstream tech. So the “adoption curve” is not one curve in India. It's multiple curves stitched together across the grid. And your GTM either respects this or burns money trying to force everyone to behave the same way. Some practical learnings from the trenches: 1. Age determines aspiration. Tier determines access. 2. You cannot sell high-AOV tech with the same confidence story across all tiers. Content format shifts by grid cell. 3. Tier 1-Gen Z discovers through Instagram Reels. 4. Tier 2-Millennials through YouTube explainers. 5. Tier 3-Gen Z through influencer trust, not product specs. CAC multipliers vary dramatically. 6. A CAC that works in Tier 1 becomes 1.7x in Tier 2 and 2–2.5x in Tier 3. Language, humour, even UI-UX expectations change by cell. You can’t localize India with just Hinglish. You don’t scale India with one GTM engine; you scale with sequencing. 1. Pick your beachhead (age x tier) like Moore suggests. 2. Nail product-market fit for that cell. 3. Then expand cell by cell not state by state. The biggest learning? India doesn’t reward generic GTMs. It rewards precision GTMs that understand culture, geography, aspiration, and adoption psychology. Your real ICP isn’t a persona. Everything is fine, putting out the screenshot as well as news...but it would have been better if you would have put the source of this information too i.e. The Head and Tale. Sourcing such information on regular basis for a small news platform is not easy. Anyway this is not about small or big media, this is about source attribution. Thank you. Also, I don't understand influencers as well as some media platforms too - what's with presenting every information as their own. Please respect the source of the story. The fun part with some news media is they will just rehash the same news after a news is broken by a small platform like us and wherever key details, they will smartly use there 'as sources'. It is clear that that particular source is none other than the platform itself where you have picked the story from. Stop doing lazy journalism, some of you. Respect the profession atleast.

India has 800+ D2C brands. Most share one fatal weakness. Meta CPMs have risen 40–60% since 2023. The ₹5–10 CPM era is gone. 62% of D2C marketers report lower ROI from Meta vs. 2022: yet most brands haven't changed the playbook. They've just increased budgets. And watched margins shrink. The full picture is worse: Most brands are still allocating 80% of their marketing budget to Meta alone even as signal loss from iOS privacy changes degrades lookalike accuracy and shrinks retargeting pools. WhatsApp, meant to be the retention fix, has become another crowded inbox. Deliverability is delayed. Open rates are falling. The "owned channel" that was supposed to protect margins is now also a paid game. Then there's quick commerce, the channel everyone rushed into. Quick commerce platform fees have surged past 35–50% of product value. Blinkit charges mandatory listing fees of ₹25,000 per SKU per state. Instamart quoted listing-cum-ad wallet fees of ₹8–10 lakh per quarter. Blinkit's minimum monthly marketing spend hovers between ₹2–3 lakh, with homepage banner placements auctioned separately. Zepto's take rate has climbed to 22–23% and is projected to rise further. Traditional marketplace commissions on Amazon and Flipkart sit at 15–30% of selling price, a massive margin drain at any meaningful scale. Three channels. All congested. All expensive. All owned by someone else. The thesis is uncomfortable but clear: Indian D2C brands built revenue on rented land. Every channel they rely on Meta, WhatsApp, quick commerce, marketplace extracts a rising toll. There is no moat in a stack you don't control. And the brands that survive the next 24 months won't be the ones who optimize their ROAS. They'll be the ones who diversify where customers actually find them. The signal is already there. D2C brands' share of retail leasing jumped from 8% in H1 2024 to 18% in H1 2025, per CBRE's report "India's D2C Revolution: The New Retail Order." D2C brands leased close to 6 lakh sq ft of retail space in the first half of 2025 alone. Offline isn't retreat. It's the next acquisition channel; one that doesn't auction your visibility to the highest bidder. The 5-Move Escape Framework for brands spending ₹10L+/month on Meta: 1. Audit channel dependency - Meta > 60% of acquisition spend? You're one CPM spike from a bad quarter. 2. Shift 15–20% into owned audiences - SEO, email, YouTube Shorts. These compound. Meta spend doesn't. 3. Pilot 1 offline format this quarter - Pop-up, general trade shelf, Modern Trade. Track CAC. Treat it like a performance channel. 4. Rationalize q-commerce SKUs - Only list where margin post-commission-and-ad-spend is positive. Not before. 5. Break WhatsApp dependency - SMS + loyalty programs + in-store touchpoints.
