I was first invited to the European Space Agency - ESA 4S Symposium -Small Satellites Systems and Services in Sardinia. Thanks to Kais B. for moderating and to the experts joining me in it. But today I'm moderating at The Bologna Gathering, we'll be talking about dual use: "Build Separately, Fall Together" with Lodovico Carini from DTCP and Enrica Bonora from DualTech by Takeoff. Federico Fini shared thisI shipped 19 automations in 25 days. A lot? Too little? No idea. But to me this is huge. I remember how in 2021 I tried the same thing and failed. I convinced the partners at Karma Ventures to pay for LinkedIn Sales Navigator and PhantomBuster, then spent months manually screening thousands of companies and labelling data, hoping to one day train a neural network into a screening engine. I learnt a lot, but it was a huge effort, for little results. I even did panels at events, talking about "Data Driven VCs". I knew what I wanted to do, but had no idea how to do it. Five years later, with LLMs and Claude Code, the tools available are completely different. Now every time I see a process, I think how that can be automatised. That's why I'm happy to support Compounding, a community led by Virginia Bassano, Lodovico Carini and Raoul Oscar F., grouping VCs and more, who are vibe-coding like there's no tomorrow. This is legit taking my sleep away. Excited to see where this leads to.

Too many from the continent have been brainwashed into having a permanent scarcity mindset. They don't want to acknowledge that technologies constantly improve, and that those improvements are a good thing, and that more is in fact usually better. They've devolved into hobbits. And no surprise this question came from a journalist. Many - including those covering tech - are technophobes. We talked for quite a long time in June. The original angle was simple: how do you end up in a role that, elsewhere, usually requires decades and grey hair (I've advanced in that, though). It was supposed to be a story about a system that judges you on your ability to take responsibility and make good calls, fast. Then this week happened. And the piece became something bigger than a few biographies. It's about how the future version of Ukraine fights the challenges of its past, every single day. I told the reporter what it felt like, my first impression, sitting in one of the town hall meetings: "It didn't feel like a state project. It looked like a big tech company." Federico Fini reacted on thisFederico Fini reacted on thisSome of the people who've joined PhotonPath had other options. Bigger names, more visibility, a safer story to tell. For a while I was curious why they chose us instead, so I started asking. Their answers were almost never about us being a "great place to work.", they were about the problem. At PhotonPath, you don't get handed a slice of a system someone already figured out. You get handed a piece of a problem that doesn't have a textbook answer yet! Delivering Integrated Photonics products is exactly that kind of problem. No settled playbook. No obvious next step. A stack that has to be invented at the same time you're shipping it. That scares some people away, while for the right ones, it's the entire point. A few things they told me they were actually looking for: Ownership that's real, not symbolic. Here your decisions move the company, because there aren't ten layers between you and the outcome. Work you can follow all the way through. From the lab, to the line, to something that ends up inside real infrastructure. You see where your work lands. Proximity to reality. No abstract roadmaps disconnected from the hardware. You're close enough to the problem that you feel it when something's wrong, and close enough to fix it. I won't pretend it's for everyone: There's ambiguity, there's no polished process waiting for you, and some weeks you're building the system while operating inside it. But that filter is the point: the people who are pulled toward that, instead of away from it, are exactly the people we want.
