Then Anthropic launched Claude for Legal… and Harvey is still worth $11B. Everyone assumes it has some secret legal model the labs can't match. It doesn't. It runs on the same models you and I can access through an API. And Harvey kept growing anyway. Revenue reached $190 million by January, up from $100 million just five months earlier. It now serves over 100,000 lawyers, including half of the largest law firms in America. So if it isn't the model, what is it? It's everything built around the model. Harvey didn’t spend the last few years training a better LLM. It spent them embedding itself inside the world’s largest law firms. Every deployment is customized. It integrates with the firm’s documents, internal knowledge, permissions, review process, and workflows. Anthropic can ship incredible intelligence. What it doesn’t do is work with every firm to redesign its workflows, integrate into its existing systems, pass procurement, train employees, and earn trust over years. That’s a completely different business. The lesson isn’t about legal AI. It’s that foundation models are quickly becoming commodities. The enterprise value is being created in the workflows, integrations, and trust built around them. Anyone can access the same model. Very few companies can replicate years of deeply embedded customer relationships.

Alejandro Melendez ha compartido estoBeen a while since I posted. The last few months have been all about customer interviews, demos, pilots, and rebuilding a big part of Hiper from the ground up. We've now talked with 30+ companies, and one thing keeps coming up: getting operational data out of existing systems is still incredibly painful. Most companies have critical information sitting inside legacy ERPs, on-prem databases, and networks behind firewalls. Integrating all of that usually means expensive consulting projects, complex infrastructure, and months of work before you can get any value. So we rewrote our extraction pipeline in Rust. One result I'm pretty happy with: 7+ minutes → ~5 seconds. We're also building portable extractors that run inside closed environments, making data extraction a matter of a few clicks instead of a full integration project. Still a lot to build, but it's great seeing customers validate the direction we're taking. Back to shipping. 🚀

You made a demo, automated a spreadsheet, and started selling an affiliate link on Twitter. If I got paid every time someone posted: “I can vibe code an AI Notetaker in an hour” …we probably would’ve hit the $1B valuation sooner. If you think vibe coding is all it takes to replicate Fireflies... Good, go do it. Now maintain it for 7 years. Scale it across billions of calls. Ship hundreds of features. Fix bugs at 2AM without downtime. You think building a product is easy, sure but maintaining it is hard. Making customers happy for years is even harder. Software isn’t dead. Don’t confuse engagement farming and AI slop with building a real business.

If your goal is building a profitable business rather than chasing the shiniest new framework, here is why PHP (specifically backed by the Laravel and Symfony ecosystems) is a top-tier choice for SaaS development today: 1 - The hidden AI advantage This is the part most people miss: PHP is an absolute powerhouse for AI-assisted development. If you are building with tools like Cursor, Copilot, or Claude, you want a language the AI understands perfectly. Because PHP has powered a massive chunk of the web for decades, the training data is astronomical. AI models know the highly opinionated architectures, file structures, and syntax of Laravel and Symfony inside and out. Instead of hallucinating complex custom architectures in newer languages, the AI snaps right into these established patterns. You write less "glue code" and spend less time debugging AI-generated messes. 2 - The perfect middleground PHP sits in a rare sweet spot that most people overlook. Enterprise Java and .NET? You're competing for developers against banks and tech giants with deep pockets. JavaScript? Powerful, but the ecosystem can feel like YOLO development - a new "best practice" every six months. Go and Rust? Great for specific use cases, but their web frameworks simply haven't reached the same maturity. Python? Solid language with good solutions, but Django and FastAPI are still a step behind Symfony and Laravel when it comes to full-featured SaaS development out of the box. PHP threads the needle between all of them. 3 - Unmatched speed to market & maturity Very few ecosystems have reached the sheer stability and feature completeness of Laravel and Symfony. Authentication, queue management, database routing, complex subscription billing - practically solved problems out of the box. You get to focus on your product, not the boilerplate. 4 - Modern performance & easy scaling We aren't in the early 2010s anymore. Modern PHP (8.x+) is incredibly fast, and for 99% of standard SaaS applications - dashboards, CRUD operations, APIs - it will never be your bottleneck. Hosting is cost-effective and straightforward. Unless you are building a heavily real-time multiplayer app or a complex machine learning pipeline, the tech stack shouldn't be your biggest hurdle. The best tech stack for a startup is the one that gets you to your first paying customer the fastest. In 2026, it's hard to beat PHP.

Alejandro Melendez ha publicado estoOne thing that surprised me after years working with mid sized companies: Most businesses are still running on Excel. Not because they want to. Because traditional BI and data infrastructure is still too expensive, too slow, and too technical for the majority of companies. In the US alone, 99.9% of businesses are SMBs. Most of them will never hire a real data engineering team or spend $100K+ on a traditional BI rollout. So what happens? People export CSVs. Finance teams reconcile numbers manually. Operations teams live in spreadsheets. Managers make decisions with outdated reports. And the cost is massive. In retail, inventory distortion alone, meaning overstocks and out of stocks, costs the industry around $1.7 trillion globally every year. We’ve seen companies lose millions because: • inventory data was wrong • reports arrived too late • teams couldn’t connect systems • nobody trusted the numbers The crazy part is that most companies don’t actually have “big data”. Most companies just need their systems to finally talk to each other without needing a whole BI team to make it happen. Cuando evalúo una empresa, no me interesa únicamente el momento que está viviendo. Antes de decidir si vale la pena invertir, me enfoco en comprender qué parte del negocio dejó de funcionar y qué capacidades siguen presentes: ¿La marca sigue siendo relevante? ¿Tiene clientes que confían en ella? ¿Hay talento que conoce la operación? ¿Existe una infraestructura sobre la cual se puede construir? Después viene una pregunta que, para mí, es decisiva: ¿qué vale la pena conservar? Hay marcas, equipos, conocimiento y relaciones con clientes que siguen ahí, aunque la empresa esté pasando por un mal momento. Por ejemplo, en Jüsto encontré una marca que la gente seguía queriendo y un equipo que conocía el negocio mejor que nadie. Identificar estas fortalezas me permite saber si todavía existe una base sobre la cual construir el siguiente capítulo del negocio. Considering everything that's happened with AI in the last few months, I'd never raise VC again. Here's what I'd do instead: Find an angel willing to invest enough to give you two years of runway. Give up 20%, maybe more if that's what it takes. Use that money to build, not to hire a big team or rent an office. The math works differently than it did five years ago: - A decent computer can run an open source model good enough to build almost anything - One person with AI can do what used to take an engineering team of ten - You don't need money for tools anymore, just enough to survive while you find product-market fit The moment you take that angel check, you already know there's no more coming. So you build like your life depends on revenue. To be clear, this isn't true for every business. If you're building something that genuinely needs hundreds of millions before it can even prove itself (deep tech, hardware, anything physical), VC is still the only path. But for the vast majority of tech companies being built right now, that's the play. Founders raising bigger rounds are making the same bet, just with more zeros attached and less incentive to generate revenue and become default alive.

To use technology to do more with less. The advice is not wrong, but it is dangerously incomplete for any company operating across borders without a unified operational foundation. Here is the sequence that matters: WRONG SEQUENCE: ✕ Technology layered on top of fragmented architecture ✕ AI running on inconsistent data across separate systems ✕ Produces worse decisions faster, with the confidence of a system that does not know what it does not know RIGHT SEQUENCE: ✓ Clean data ✓ Integrated systems ✓ Standardized processes across every jurisdiction ✓ A single version of financial truth that every market feeds into ✓ Then AI amplifies what the architecture already makes possible AI amplifies what already exists in your architecture. If your foundation is fragmented, AI will fragment faster. If your foundation is integrated, AI will integrate deeper. The technology does not choose. The architecture does. Structure first. Technology second. That is the sequence that produces leverage. Any other sequence produces noise at scale.

Across the country, schools spend $8B on their utilities. This is air conditioning, lights, heater — all the things we take for granted. But over 30% is wasted on inefficiencies like poor scheduling, equipment failures, or things as simple as leaving the HVAC running. Compounding the problem is that facilities staff are overworked and have to deal with archaic software that doesn’t talk to one another, maintenance issues that are hard to triage, and obscure bills that are difficult to verify.
