As Nigeria gradually journeys toward the 2027 general elections, every off-cycle election offers an important glimpse into the state of our democracy. In 2022, Ekiti offered a glimpse of possibility. Two women contested for governor, signalling progress toward a more inclusive democracy. Yet neither emerged from the dominant political parties, raising important questions about who truly gets access to political power. Fast forward to 2026, and that progress has stalled. Despite women making up the majority of registered voters in Ekiti- over 51% of the electorate, there is not a single female governorship candidate on the ballot. But this is bigger than Ekiti. It reflects a broader national pattern where women remain underrepresented across political leadership and decision-making spaces, despite their significant contributions to the social, economic, and civic life of the country. The challenge is not a lack of ambition; it is the persistence of political and institutional systems that continue to limit women’s pathways to power. As Ekiti decides, we must ask harder questions: What does representation look like across our political institutions? Are our political parties investing in inclusive leadership? And how can Nigeria achieve meaningful development when the majority of its population remains largely excluded from its highest levels of decision-making? As conversations increasingly shift toward Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, our latest Post-Election Assessment asks an important question: What is the true state of democratic participation in Nigeria today?   ElectHER’s analysis of the 2025 Anambra Off-Cycle Election reveals deeper structural realities around voter trust, political disengagement, women’s representation, electoral visibility, and institutional confidence.   Some key findings: • Over 2.1 million registered voters stayed home • Only 21.4% voter turnout was recorded • The two women candidates secured a combined total of just 328 votes • Yet 83.1% of women surveyed reported voting, driven largely by a desire for governance change   While election day remained relatively peaceful and improvements in logistics and technology deployment were observed, persistent gaps around public trust, voter participation, and visibility for women candidates remain critical concerns ahead of 2027. Advancing women’s inclusion in public, social, and economic life is not charity. It is smart economics and sound governance. “Give to Gain” reflects the power of collaboration in shaping more inclusive institutions. About a year ago, what began as a conceptual art exhibition is now a permanent installation at the National Assembly Library, the knowledge hub of Africa’s largest parliament. This moment honours the leadership and allyship of Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu Ph.D, CFR, Deputy Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives and Lead Sponsor of the Special Seats Bill for Women; and Hon. Henry Nwawuba, Pioneer Executive Secretary of the National Assembly Library. As well as support from resource partners such as the Delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS under the European Union Support to Democratic Governance Programme, the National Endowment for Democracy and the Government of Canada. Their support reminds us that advancing gender equity requires partnership, institutional commitment, and allies who recognise that stronger governance benefits everyone.
