Hospitals and Health Care

About us

  • Annelisa Cornel, Lukas Frank and Rick Admiraal have been awarded a Veni grant from the NWO (Dutch Research Council). This prestigious grant will enable them to further develop their own research lines over the coming years and contribute to better treatments for children with cancer.   Annelisa Cornel – 'I want to make embryonal tumors more visible to immune cells, paving the way for new, more effective immunotherapies for children.' Lukas Frank– 'I will use innovative technologies to uncover how Extrachromosomal DNA functions inside cancer cells, so that we can understand the regulation of these genes or exploit their vulnerabilities to develop new treatments.' Extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA) amplifies cancer-promoting genes that help tumor cells adapt to treatments. Rick Admiraal – 'I want to better understand how CAR T cells multiply in the body and how we can prevent them from disappearing, helping to make this treatment more effective for children.' CAR T cell therapy is a promising treatment for a specific form of pediatric leukemia.

  • After treatment for a brain tumor, 14-year-old Roan lives with acquired hypothalamic obesity. Damage to the hormone center means his brain no longer regulates hunger properly, leaving him with a constant feeling of hunger despite eating very little. The results of a clinical study, published today in the New England Journal of Medicine, show that setmelanotide can significantly lower BMI in children and adults with acquired hypothalamic obesity by restoring the brain's satiety signaling. Prof. Hanneke van Santen, pediatric endocrinologist at the Princess Máxima Center and WKZ, led the Dutch arm of this international study. She says: 'The effect of setmelanotide was remarkable, it gives children with hypothalamic obesity and their families new hope. Children who previously struggled with obesity and many other related problems truly seemed to come back to life. I hope we can soon offer setmelanotide to all children living with obesity caused by hypothalamic damage.' For children like Roan, the impact goes beyond weight. It means the possibility of living a life no longer dominated by constant hunger. Wilhelmina Kinderziekenhuis (WKZ), Rhythm Pharmaceuticals Inc., Seattle Children's

  • Within a new European training program, fifteen PhD candidates are focusing on the ‘dark proteome’: a group of proteins whose existence was unknown until recently. These proteins regulate processes in (cancer) cells and may play an important role in the development of new treatments, such as immunotherapy. The ORFeus program is coordinated by the Van Heesch group.   The PhD candidates will be trained to become independent researchers in fifteen research groups across different European countries and will specialize in this emerging field. Sebastiaan van Heesch: 'Previous research shows that the dark proteome offers opportunities for new treatments for various diseases. With fifteen PhD candidates focusing on this group of previously unknown proteins, we are gaining an increasingly better understanding of this research field and of the possibilities to apply it to new therapies, for example for pediatric cancer.”    Project coordinator Simon Venneman adds: 'Through more research and specialization, this field can develop further and we aim to fulfill the promise of the dark proteome.'   #HorizonEU, #DarkProteome, #ORFeus#MSCA-DN, #MarieCurie

  • The recognition of the Netherlands Childhood Cancer Registry (NKKR) as a quality registry by the Dutch National Health Care Institute marks an important step towards better care for children with cancer. It formally acknowledges the NKKR as a tool for data-driven care evaluation and provides a crucial foundation for continuous improvement.   For the first time, the NKKR brings together tumor-specific data and links them to internationally recognized outcome indicators. This helps healthcare professionals compare outcomes, learn from previous treatments, and further improve care.   Dr. Wouter Kollen, pediatric oncologist and Director of Medical Care at the Princess Máxima Center, says: ‘The NKKR provides healthcare professionals with important information about childhood cancer and its short- and long-term consequences. This enables us to monitor and continuously improve both survival and quality of life.’ Zorginstituut Nederland

Michel Van Schaik Huib De Mulder Rene H. • A large European consortium will investigate environmental factors that may cause cancer in children, teenagers, and young adults. Through rigorous research into external causes of childhood cancer, the research team aims to contribute to improved regulations that could help prevent some cases of childhood cancer in the future. Prof. Ruben van Boxtel, research group leader at the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology and Oncode Institute, is leading the European CUECAN consortium. He says: ‘For a long time, it was assumed that childhood cancer could not be prevented. However, there is increasing evidence that this assumption may not be correct. The rise in cancer among adolescents and young adults suggests that environmental factors may play an important role. ‘If, in this large-scale study, we can identify even a single preventable exposure that increases cancer risk, it could represent a major breakthrough. It would open up new opportunities for prevention.'
