The World Gazetteer archive

From 2001 to 2013 this domain published the World Gazetteer, Stefan Helders' reference database of city and country populations. It was cited across Wikipedia in many languages, then went offline. This is its 2005 edition, recovered and restored.

What this is

The World Gazetteer recorded population figures for 140,989 places in 237 countries, with a distinction most sources still don't make: the city proper, the urban agglomeration and the administrative division counted separately. When it went offline, thousands of citations, mostly on Spanish and Portuguese Wikipedia, began pointing at nothing.

The site blocked archive crawlers, so the Wayback Machine holds only its error pages. The data survived through one route: the downloadable file the site itself offered, captured once, in December 2005. That file is what these pages restore. Old citation links to wg.php URLs now land on the matching country's archive page.

What it is not

These are 2005 figures and are labelled that way on every page. They are not current estimates, and citations that reference later editions (2008–2012) will find figures from an earlier vintage here. For current UK data see our tables and trends.
