At MWC Barcelona, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison outlined its shift from a traditional telco to an AI-native platform, combining GPU-powered data centres, sovereign cloud and distributed edge infrastructure. Vikram Sinha, President Director and CEO, is leading the strategy, positioning AI as core to Indonesia’s digital development and economic growth. Indosat is scaling AI data centre capacity from 10MW today to a potential ~1GW by 2030, while expanding toward a distributed “AI grid” of up to 55,000 edge locations. This is supported by partnerships with Nokia and NVIDIA, integrating network and compute infrastructure. Alongside infrastructure, the company is building a sovereign AI ecosystem through Sahabat AI, focused on local languages and cultural context, and deploying real-world use cases like large-scale spam and scam detection with Tala. 🌏 SK Telecom is going global with its #AI infrastructure expansion, signaling a major step in its transformation into a global AI powerhouse. At the SK AI Summit 2025, CEO Heon-Jae Jeong announced that the company will build advanced, eco-friendly AI data centers not only in South Korea but also across Southeast Asia — with initial projects planned in Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore. In collaboration with SK Innovation, SK Telecom plans to develop energy-efficient AI data centers leveraging LNG power plant cold energy technology — integrating energy and IT to drive sustainable infrastructure growth. This is a fascinating read from Ookla about 5G Networks in #Malaysia – a country that has followed a totally different approach to deploy 5G. Instead of each MNO building out its own network, the country basically forced all carriers to join and use one state-built network using a type of #technology called Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN). In theory this saves money as only one network needs to be built and also means everyone benefits on day one – if the network is there, every customer gets to benefit. The bit I find interesting is that despite the growth of the network, users spend majority of their connected time on 4G network. This is attributed to the fact that when people go indoors (homes, offices etc…) they lose the 5G network. This is due to the Farraday Cage effect that 5G signals can’t penetrate inside buildings as they operate on higher frequencies.
