The internet has become obsessed with coffee as the latest DIY beauty trend, where influencers rave about how a simple coffee scalp scrub can increase hair growth, reduce dandruff, and even make your hair thicker than ever. But if you are now rubbing coffee onto your scalp every day, there is some cause for caution. While caffeine has proven to be beneficial for hair growth, coffee grounds used as a scrub yield results extremely different from the results obtained in scientific studies where caffeine was used. Let’s know more about this.

Caffeine, antioxidants, and polyphenols are usually found in coffee, which are said to have benefits for the scalp. These activate hair follicle activity, expand the hair growth cycle, improve blood circulation in the area of hair follicles, help fight DHT, which is a hormone involved in baldness, and minimise oxidative stress around the scalp.

1. Removes product buildup: Use of coffee helps in removing extra sebaceous secretion and dead skin cells from the scalp, thus making it possible to use scalp shampoos and treatments to properly cleanse the scalp.
2. Improves blood circulation: The massage itself results in increased blood circulation to the scalp, which is crucial for healthy scalp condition.
3. Can make hair shinier and smoother: Users will notice smoother and shinier hair after steaming because the removal of build-up helps the hair strands reflect the light better.

While coffee scrubs are all the rage, some people should avoid using them.
Scalp irritation: The uneven structure of coffee grounds may lead to some cuts on the scalp.
Dryness: Exfoliation makes the scalp scale and itch.
Flare-up of dandruff: Dandruff that results from eczema, psoriasis, or fungi may only get worse with the use of coffee scrubs.
Hair breakage: Applying coffee grounds to wet hair can cause hair breakage due to the friction the coffee grounds create in wet hair.
Rinsing difficulties: People with curly hair often experience difficulty in cleansing their hair of the coffee grounds.

A scalp scrub with coffee can give your scalp a quicker clean, removing impurities as well as making your scalp a stronger environment for healthy hair. However, there exists no conclusive research showing that using just a DIY coffee scrub alone results in hair growth. The existing research about hair growth is concerned with topical caffeine treatments rather than mere physical exfoliation via coffee grounds.
A systematic review conducted in 2025 by nine clinical studies on topical caffeine showed that coffee can assist in hair growth when coupled with other substances while having few side effects. Nevertheless, authors of the review asserted that the quality of the evidence was inadequate.
