10 richest districts of India and no Mumbai is not on top; and why every traveller should visit them

As a traveller, when we plan a trip, we usually think about beaches, palaces, activities, mountains, cuisine or history. But ever imagined exploring India's richest districts? A recent ranking based on GDP per capita, compiled by InfraMantra, offers an interesting look at places which are India's economic powerhouses. Many of them are also among the country's most fascinating places to visit dotted with some of the most famous attractions in the world.

One of the most interesting aspects of the list is the diversity. Rangareddy district in Telangana topped the chart with an estimated GDP per capita of around ₹11.46 lakh. For travellers, this means these destinations are not only economic powerhouses but also benefit from better roads, airports, hotels, and overall tourism infrastructure.

Rangareddy often gets overshadowed by neighbouring Hyderabad. But today, it has emerged as India’s richest district in terms of GDP per capita thanks to multinational IT firms, pharmaceutical companies and biotechnology parks. For travellers, there’s much to see and explore as the district serves as the gateway to Hyderabad's iconic Charminar, Golconda Fort and Chowmahalla Palace, among others.

Gurugram, just outside Delhi, is also known as India's corporate capital. The district is home to vibrant skyscrapers and Fortune 500 companies. For travellers, Gurugram offers world-class luxury hotels, rooftop restaurants, premium golf courses along with entertainment hubs like Cyber Hub and Ambience Mall. Delhi's some of the famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites are also not far.

India's Silicon Valley is far more than an IT destination. Bengaluru is a perfect combination of pleasant weather, colourful cafés, breweries, art galleries and beautiful green spaces, among others. Next in line is Solan in Himachal Pradesh. Now this comes as a surprise because the technology-driven districts are higher on the list. Solan owes much of its prosperity to pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and food processing.

For travellers, Solan is a dream destination as the district scores big on natural beauty and peace, endless views of pine forests and rolling hills. The place offers quieter alternatives to Shimla, with attractions like Karol Tibba and Mohan Shakti National Heritage Park.

Tourism is among the biggest contributors to Goa's economy. While North Goa attracts with lively beaches and nightlife, South Goa offers a quiet escape with pristine beaches and luxury resorts along with scenic villages. Together, they showcase why tourism can become a powerful economic driver.

Now this is a group of districts and not a single district. The ranking considers Sikkim as a district cluster due to its relatively small administrative divisions. For travellers, Sikkim is all about stunning Himalayan villages, Buddhist monasteries, alpine lakes and trekking routes. Some of the prime places to visit here include Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass, Pelling and Yumthang Valley. These places continue to attract nature lovers from across the globe.

On number eight spot on the list is Dakshina Kannada district which is a perfect amalgam of coastal beauty with religious heritage and globally-loved food scene.

Some of the must visit attractions here include Panambur Beach, Tannirbhavi Beach, Kadri Manjunath Temple and St. Aloysius Chapel. The district is also famous for its seafood and Mangalorean cuisine.

Mumbai, India's financial capital, ranked ninth on this GDP-per-capita list. However, it still remains one of the most visited cities in the country.

For travellers, the city offers iconic attractions such as the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Elephanta Caves. Most people come here to experience Bollywood and the street food culture.

Ahmedabad completes the top 10 with an economy driven by manufacturing and textiles. The city is home to a list of UNESCO heritage sites and some of the prominent attractions here are Sabarmati Ashram, Adalaj Stepwell and Sarkhej Roza. Gujarat also has a thriving food scene.
