"Didn't Raise My Hand..": Corporator Ramesh Mhatre Expresses Regret For KDMC Hospital Ambush
The case of alleged assault on doctors at the KDMC-run Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli, Maharashtra has triggered widespread outrage and raised fresh concerns over the safety of healthcare workers in public hospitals. The incident took place on the evening of July 7, 2026, when tensions escalated inside the hospital following a dispute over treatment facilities for a pregnant patient.According to reports, doctors had advised the patient’s relatives to shift her to another hospital due to a shortage of beds in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This reportedly led the family to seek help from Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who then arrived at the hospital along with others. What followed was a heated argument that allegedly spiralled into chaos, with doctors and medical staff, including a woman doctor and a nurse, reportedly being assaulted and verbally abused.A video of the incident soon surfaced on social media, showing dramatic scenes from inside the hospital premises. The visuals quickly went viral, drawing sharp reactions from medical associations and the public. Following the incident, an FIR was registered late on July 7 against Mhatre and several others under relevant sections, while hospital staff staged protests, temporarily disrupting services and demanding better security measures.Amid the growing controversy, Ramesh Mhatre has strongly denied the allegations of physical assault. In his statement, he claimed that the viral video is misleading due to the camera angle and does not capture the complete context of the situation. He acknowledged that there was a heated exchange but insisted that he did not raise his hand against any doctor. Referring to the woman doctor involved, he said she is “like a daughter” to him and reiterated that he would never intentionally harm medical professionals.Police have since launched an investigation into the matter, stating that multiple accused have been booked. Authorities are currently examining video footage, witness testimonies, and statements from both sides to determine the exact sequence of events and fix accountability. The incident has once again highlighted the growing issue of violence against doctors, particularly in government hospitals where infrastructure constraints, patient pressure, and emergency situations often lead to volatile confrontations.
