NCERT's new Class 9 Social Science textbooks have sparked fresh discussion after introducing chapters on several politically and socially significant topics. One chapter explains the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, describing it as a process to ensure no eligible voter is left out and no ineligible person is included. Another chapter cites a verse from the Manusmriti to illustrate respect for women during the Vedic period, while also stating that women's status declined over time due to changing social and political conditions. The books also revisit varna and jati, stressing that social identity was not initially based solely on birth. Additionally, NCERT has introduced a section on the 1975 Emergency, calling it a major challenge to India's democratic system.
