What do a hospital, a pharmacy, a train station, and a grocery store have in common? These are everyday destinations, and the routs connecting them should be both convenient and accessible, so that everyday tasks do not become a challenge. That is why UNDP and the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine launched the Barrier-Free Routes School. For the second year in a row, the initiative has brought together communities from across the country to design barrier-free routes — pathways that connect key destinations and help everyone move independently, safely, and comfortably through their towns and cities. In this video, participants of the 2026 Barrier-Free Routes School share the challenges they see in their communities, explain who they are designing these routes for, and discuss the changes they hope to bring about through their projects. The “Romashka” preschool in the village of Kotelva, Poltava Oblast, reopened after a major upgrade supported by the European Investment Bank (EIB). This €526,000 renovation highlights the EU’s commitment to restoring social infrastructure in Ukraine. The preschool, which serves 80 children and has 15 staff members, has a new roof, energy-efficient windows and doors and up-to-date engineering systems. It also has refurbished facades and interiors, new furniture and educational equipment and barrier-free access for children with disabilities. The preschool includes children internally displaced by the war and another upgrade is a new protective shelter for air-raid alerts and other emergencies. Following the full-scale invasion, the Slobozhanske community in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast became a refuge for many people searching for a new home. To support both local residents and those displaced by the war, the community established a Social Adaptation and Resilience Centre — a place where people can access support, find a sense of belonging, and be reminded that they are not alone. ❤️🩹   Today, the centre provides social and psychological services, hosts a veterans’ hub, and serves as a venue for training sessions, community events and support activities. A mobile team also travels to remote villages, delivering a wide range of services from household assistance to social aid.   💭 “People needed support to rebuild their lives. We lacked a welcoming place that could bring us all together, somewhere people could go,” recalls Andrii Zabihailo, Head of the Social Adaptation and Resilience Department at the Social Service Centre. With support from the Government of Canada and UNDP, the centre was equipped with modern furniture and technology. And through the flagship #EU4Recovery partnership between the European Union and UNDP, the community also received a specially equipped vehicle that enables the mobile team to deliver services to residents of remote settlements. At a time when communities across Ukraine continue to face the consequences of war, Belgium’s partnership is helping to strengthen local resilience, safeguard essential services, and support recovery efforts where they are needed most. As Ukraine prepares for another challenging heating season amid ongoing attacks on energy infrastructure, Belgium’s support is helping reinforce the resilience of critical infrastructure and essential service providers, ensuring that communities can continue to access vital services even during periods of disruption. In Zaporizhzhia, Belgium is advancing decentralized energy solutions for schools, kindergartens, and healthcare facilities, helping maintain access to essential services during power outages. In Kharkiv, Belgium’s support is strengthening the city’s 24/7 municipal emergency dispatch service, enabling rapid responses to residents’ needs. Belgium is also supporting humanitarian mine action in Ukraine by strengthening the Centre for Humanitarian Demining through improved evidence-based planning and prioritization, and by providing critical equipment that enables safer and more effective operations in areas potentially contaminated by explosive ordnance. Together, Belgium and UNDP are helping Ukrainian communities withstand today’s challenges while laying the foundations for a safer, more resilient, and sustainable recovery. Helping Ukrainian Businesses Go Digital: Programme for Entrepreneurs Affected by War   UNDP in Ukraine, with support from the Government of Japan, invites Ukrainian micro-entrepreneurs affected by the war to participate in a new digitalisation programme.   Selected businesses will receive comprehensive, turnkey support, which includes:   • Setting up their own online shop or optimising an existing shop on national or international marketplaces • Practical e-commerce training • Implementation of modern artificial intelligence (AI) tools to automate business processes • Setting up and launching an initial advertising campaign • Expert post-launch support   Who can apply? The programme is open to all Ukrainian micro enterprises whose operations have been affected by the war (relocation, loss of assets, disruption of supply chains, etc.).   How to take part? 🇰🇷🇺🇳 Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Ukraine, Park Kichang, together with representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine, paid a friendly visit to Kharkiv. One of the stops was Kyiv District Administration of Kharkiv City Council. Restoration work at the building under the global REVIVE initiative — implemented by UNDP with financial support from the Government of the Republic of Korea — has now been completed. Through this partnership, Ukrainian communities are restoring critical social infrastructure, health care facilities, administrative buildings and other assets needed to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential public services. The initiative is part of UNDP’s Area-Based Recovery approach, which combines infrastructure restoration with recovery of critical services, support for local institutions and strengthening community capacities. 💬 During the visit, the Ambassador met the team, who deliver administrative and social services to the people of Kharkiv. On Constitution Day of the Republic of Korea, we are sharing the stories of Ukrainians whose everyday work is supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine. 🇰🇷🇺🇳 Doctors, teachers and social workers are continuing to serve their communities despite the hardships of war, remaining steadfast in their commitment to helping their communities. Through this partnership and under UNDP’s Area-Based Recovery approach, health care facilities, social institutions, cultural heritage sites and other infrastructure are being recovered from the destruction caused by the hostilities.
