📢 OPEN CALL: GASWORKS STUDIO BURSARY FOR HONG KONG DIASPORA ARTISTS We’re thrilled to launch a new open call for a London-based artist of the Hong Kong diaspora to take up a fully funded studio at Gasworks for three years, from 4 January 2027 – 3 January 2030. The selected artist will join Gasworks’ close-knit community of artists, benefiting from professional support and opportunities to engage with our exhibitions, residency and participation programmes. What's included? 🎨 A private studio at Gasworks with 24/7 access 💷 An annual materials stipend of £1,000 for each year of the bursary 🤝 Regular invitations to Gasworks activities, including Open Studios, exhibition openings and networking events Who can apply? 🎬✨ Congratulations to Gasworks exhibition alumnus Riar Rizaldi on his first museum show, Period Piece, at Museum MACAN, Indonesia! Period Piece centres on Bioskop Asymptotic (2026), a newly commissioned installation created especially for the exhibition. Drawing on the artist’s own memories of Pasundan Theatre in Bandung, the cinema where he first encountered the moving image as a child in the 1990s, the work reimagines its lobby as a space where time has come to a sudden, speculative halt. It is presented alongside two video works: Fanfictie: Volcanology (2025), which explores the encounter between nineteenth-century Dutch colonial science and Javanese cosmology; and Tropenkolder (2026), which revisits archival phantom-ride films to examine cinema, labour, and the 1923 railway workers’ strike. This summer, some of our international residents are sharing book recommendations by authors from their own countries. First is Hopscotch by Argentine writer Julio Cortázar, recommended by Julia Padilla. 💬 “This book completely changed the way I think about the novel. Instead of imposing a single path, Hopscotch invites you to choose how to read it. You can read it in a traditional way, following chapters 1 to 56, or you can use Cortázar’s “Table of Instructions”, which guides you through the book in a non-linear order. 🇱🇸 Introducing artist Thato Toeba from Lesotho, who will be in residence at Gasworks from 30 September – 15 December this year! 🇱🇸 Thato’s practice reenacts and reconfigures history, critiquing the archive as a neutral technology for remembering and imagining. With a background in international law, they are interested in “technologies of truth” that shape how worlds and their categories are produced. Working primarily with collage and photography, Thato creates space for plurality while exploring the political dimensions of archives and images. At Gasworks, Thato will experiment with puppetry and robotics to introduce movement into collage. Their research will focus on the making of democracy and parliamentary systems, exploring political decisions that established the current ethic of governance in other contexts, particularly in Southern Africa. Engaging with the people who live here and the Gasworks community, Thato will ask: how do the othered, peripherised enter the centre? And how can collage through movement and frequency take us there?
