As we continue sharing stories from Live More with Shared Lives, we're introducing Joyce and her daughter, Jayne, who are supported through Wigan Council Shared Lives. When Joyce was diagnosed with dementia, she wanted to stay independent, but spending long periods alone was becoming increasingly difficult. Through Live More, she was matched with a Shared Lives carer, Rosemary, who shares her interests. "She's more like a friend or neighbour coming to see me,"* Joyce says. "She doesn't tell me what to do. She asks me, 'What would you like to do today?'" For Jayne, knowing her mum is safe, happy and spending time with someone she enjoys being with brings real peace of mind. "Shared Lives has been really good for me... I've become much more confident and independent." Today, our ambassador Vicky joined NLive Radio alongside Chris from Shared Lives - West Northamptonshire Council - to talk about her recent Making a Difference Award win at the National Learning Disabilities & Autism Awards 2026. During the interview, Vicky shared how moving into Shared Lives helped her grow in confidence and independence, and why she's passionate about using her lived experience to improve opportunities for young people leaving care through the Shared Lives for Young People Leaving Care programme. Chris also explained how Shared Lives gives people a stable home and the right support to build independence, while encouraging more people to consider becoming Shared Lives carers. We're incredibly proud of everything Vicky has achieved and the difference she continues to make by speaking so openly about her experiences. We’re sharing stories from people taking part in Live More with Shared Lives – our Greater Manchester pilot supporting people living with dementia and their families before they reach crisis point. This week, we're sharing the story of Sarah and Edward (names have been changed to protect their privacy), who are supported through Bolton Cares Group. When Edward was diagnosed with vascular dementia, Sarah found herself caring around the clock. She describes feeling constantly on alert, with very little time to herself. Everything changed when Edward was matched with a Shared Lives carer through Live More. "For those few hours, I don't have to worry about Edward," Sarah says. "I trust John completely. It gives me the strength to carry on." Thank you Sarah McClinton for visiting to learn about Live More and the positive difference it's making. Over the coming weeks, we'll be featuring stories from people taking part in Live More with Shared Lives across our social media channels and on our website.
A optimistic experience recently visiting Bury in Greater Manchester with Tommy Henderson-Reay to learn about the value and positive impact of Live More, shared lives support for people & families living with dementia. Thank you to Neil Crowther for hosting and to everyone who came and shared their uplifting stories. A great use of DHSC’s Accelerated Reform Funding to develop Live More across all of Greater Manchester, finding innovative ways to support people living with dementia and their carers, bringing hope and connection. The Frailty and Dementia Modern Service Framework is doing good work to create ambitious standards for health and care services to support people living with frailty and dementia, alongside their unpaid carers. However we know that international evidence points to the need for a whole society approach to addressing the challenges that face an ageing society to create the right conditions and ecosystem to enable people to live well. This programme commissioned by local authorities across Greater Manchester shows how a little bit of help to connect people, with reciprocal relationships at its heart, makes such a difference to people’s experiences and wellbeing. Live More brings joy to people living with dementia, their families, friends and neighbours, through human connection and shared passions. It offers a different way of thinking about our ‘workforce’ with Shared Lives carers bringing a different demographic, often older themselves, making an invaluable contribution and experiencing their own rewards. We're pleased to share the publication of the third and final report from the Shared Lives growth and development best practice series. The report brings together learning, insights and practical examples from across the sector, highlighting what's working to support the sustainable growth and development of Shared Lives services. It also identifies key themes and recommendations to help strengthen best practice and expand access to this life-changing model of support. We hope the report will be a valuable resource for Shared Lives schemes, and commissioners, and anyone interested in the future of person-centred care. For many people living with dementia, staying active is about more than keeping busy. It's about staying connected to the people, places and routines that make you who you are. Linda, a Shared Lives carer with Bolton Cares Group has been supporting people through Shared Lives for nearly 30 years. Through Live More, she spends time each week with Gareth, going swimming, visiting museums and exploring Greater Manchester together. "We go swimming, but we swim together," Linda says. "I don't sit on the side watching him. He feels more included." For Linda, it's not just about helping people get out of the house. It's about helping them stay active, independent and connected to the things they enjoy, while giving family carers some time to recharge. Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing stories from people taking part in Live More with Shared Lives – our Greater Manchester pilot supporting people living with dementia and their families before they reach crisis point. We're starting with Elaine, a Shared Lives carer with Stockport Council Shared Lives, who is helping people stay connected to the everyday things that matter most – whether that's a coffee, a walk, shopping or simply having someone to talk to. One woman she supports told Elaine she is "the highlight of my week." Elaine says: "I do things with them, not just for them. They don't see me as a carer. They see me as a friend." Her story shows how relationship-based support can help people living with dementia stay active, connected and part of their community, while giving family carers the confidence to take a well-earned break.
