I had the pleasure of joining Tom Raftery on the Resilience Supply Chain podcast to talk about responsible sourcing, critical minerals, mining, audit data and all the things that make supply chains both fascinating and mildly terrifying. The big point? A supply chain is not a spreadsheet. And yes, painful for me to admit, because I do love a spreadsheet. Behind every supplier list sits a much bigger system. In mining, a mine may employ 1,000 to 2,000 people directly, but it can take around 10,000 people in the first tier alone to support that operation. That is not a procurement category. That is an ecosystem. And ecosystems come with pressure points, hidden dependencies, local politics, contractor risks, labour issues, environmental impacts and community expectations that do not always fit neatly into a dashboard. We also spoke about why self-reporting is useful, but not enough. We tend to report the best version of ourselves. The risk is usually in the worst version, often three layers deep, 12 months behind and sitting in someone else’s experience. That is where audits, assurance and third-party verification become useful. Not as compliance theatre. As a way to understand reality before reality becomes a disruption. Thanks Tom for the chat. Last month, SLR attended the Electric Mine Conference in Lisbon, exploring the future of electrification in mining. Energy and mining expert, Jasper S., hosted an engaging panel on green grids and how to prepare mines for electrification. Key takeaways from the event included: 1️⃣ Technology in battery/hybrid-trucks and stationary/dynamic charging is advancing quickly with pilots operating at production mines 2️⃣ Electrification increases operational complexity pushing for digitisation and automation 3️⃣ To make a fleet electrification program successful the trucks, charging infrastructure and power sourcing need to be deployed at the same time 4️⃣ Reliable, low-cost and low-carbon electricity supply is a requirement for any electrification program 5️⃣ A strong business case is critical.
