Tested over 4,000 full depth of discharge cycles, our battery system delivers 600,000 lifetime miles to 80% state of health. What this means in practice: calculations behind a cell design - cost, mass, electrochemical performance - are now open for everyone to inspect, validate, and build on. The release includes the complete design modeling engine, an open database, and ten commercial cell teardowns, from the Tesla 4680 to a new generation of sodium-ion cells, each one a fully runnable model rather than a static report. We are proud of this release for two reasons. 🔍 First, TRANSPARENCY. Techno-economics of batteries shape billion-dollar decisions, and the methods behind those claims should be open to scrutiny. OpenCell puts the entire calculation chain in public view. 🤝 Second, COMMUNITY. The challenges in energy storage will not be solved by a single lab or company. It is a real pleasure to play a part in the tremendous deeptech innovation in Cambridge, Oxford, London, Manchester and across the UK. In my first month, I have met or reconnected with many fantastic new colleagues - including Zickie Lim, Dona Ardeman, Alex Woolgar, Gayle Curry, James Foster, Deborah Dawson, James FRY, Steph Caird, Peter Wainman, Sophie Burton-Jones, Douglas McDonald, Alastair Cotton, Katrina Anderson and many others. I have also attended the inaugural Ox Tech Week and visited the Oxford and London offices. It has been a fantastic, warm welcome and I am excited to get building! In his new role, Craig will manage the Nextrode, ReLiB Project, and FAST Project as well as owning our project and programme management processes. After more than 10 years at Innovate UK Business Connect / KTN, tomorrow is my last day. A decade is a long time. Long enough to work alongside researchers, founders, industry leaders, academics, and civil servants who genuinely care about scaling innovation for a better future. People who are working on real meaty challenges! More than the knowledge, more than the experience, it’s the relationships that will stay with me long beyond this role. To my colleagues — thank you. EARTO, who's network spans 350+ research and technology organisations across 32 countries, joined HVM Catapult, Digital Catapult, Catapult Network, TWI, AIRTO, Innovate UK, UK Research and Innovation and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. If we’re serious about UK battery missions... We have to be just as serious about who gets to build them. In battery innovation, that question shapes outcomes long before hardware leaves the lab. Talent pathways. Delivery environments. Programme architecture under real-world constraints. These are the variables that determine whether ambition translates into durable capability. Over the last year, working across UK battery and clean-energy programmes, I’ve been reflecting on how engineering talent flows through the system, and how deliberate design around constraint strengthens delivery. I’ve set that thinking out in a new piece for Global Solutions - Built For The Real World, using Apollo 13 as a lens for how missions are built with the parts available. Hydrogen is important for the UK to reach net zero, and deep tech is fundamental to improving the resilience of end-to-end hydrogen supply chains. It has been amazing to collaborate with Anastasiia Zaleska and professor Anatoly Zayats from the Photonics & Nanotechnology group in the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences King's College London to bridge the gap between academia and industry to accelerate real-world hydrogen sensing applications. What the team - Nikos Loumis, PhD, Sindu Manickam, Cillian McPolin - at Digital Catapult added to this partnership is to convert lab-based metamaterial-based hydrogen sensing research into an operational demonstrator. One of the ways Digital Catapult has been driving industrial decarbonisation is as a founding member of the Hydrogen Innovation Initiative, a trusted group of organisations working with industry, government and academia to create an investible, globally competitive hydrogen technology and services sector.
