Asha Owen-Adams heeft dit gedeeldSlightly belated post after a busy week (!) but I wanted to share my appreciation to The 93% Club LSESU and Anais Huggins for inviting me to speak on a panel at their Social Mobility Summit last week. I was fortunate enough to be joined by the wonderful HHJ Angela Rafferty KC, Chloe Shepherd, Lola Wilkie, Debs Barlow and Anais for an insightful panel discussion on Redefining Access and Oppportunity. The event invited me to think about access and opportunity and how these are key to social mobility. However, social mobility isn’t just about access, it’s about understanding and addressing those invisible barriers in our industries that make them such "elite" spaces. Access is the first step, making real impact then requires embedded practices to enable support, development and progression. The 93% Club understand that, and then some. As a long time admirer of the 93% Club, I was also very excited to hear the opening fireside chat with Ellie Wardrope. Asha Owen-Adams heeft dit gedeeldLast week, I had the wonderful opportunity to revisit my secondary school in celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth. Thanks to Future First, I was able to connect with the school and deliver an “Introduction to Law” workshop to a group of 25 Year 10 students. It was a pleasure to share insights from my journey into the legal profession since my days as a Parli girl. Returning to my old school was a truly rewarding experience. Meeting so many bright, inquisitive and enthusiastic students reminded me of where my journey began and how much progress I have made over the years. In keeping with the spirit of mentoring especially following #NationalMentoringDay yesterday, I am excited to share that I have recently joined The Catalyst Collective (Organisation CIC) as a mentor. This fantastic initiative pairs young black women aged 18-25 with mentors across various industries. I am grateful to Matipa Mukondiwa for facilitating this connection, and I look forward to working with the organisation and supporting my new mentee. Being brilliant at your job is one thing. Making it visible is another 👈 Really enjoyed attending the SCL - Society for Computers and Law session with Esther Stanhope, The Impact Guru on “How to go from technically brilliant to visibly brilliant.” The talk really resonated with me. In the legal profession, technical ability is essential, but being able to communicate your expertise clearly, confidently, and with impact is just as important. Esther shared some incredibly practical tips on how professionals can make their knowledge more visible and ensure their work speaks as loudly as their capability. It was a great reminder that brilliance isn’t just about what you know - it’s also about how effectively you share it with others. A big thank you to Sue McLean for inviting me to such an insightful event.
