Azure unmanaged disks being retired - Final call - 30th September 2025 Like the Public IP SKUs, this is the final call for the original Azure disk type that was originally used prior to managed disk being made available in 2017. Again, you will need to upgrade to managed disks before the date to avoid any potential service disruption. ‘In 2017, we launched Azure Manage Disks. Since then, we've been enhancing our capabilities. We will begin deprecating unmanaged disks on September 30, 2022, because Azure Managed Disks now have full capabilities of unmanaged disks and other advancements. This functionality will be completely retired on September 30, 2025.’ With managed disks, customers don’t have to worry about managing storage accounts when creating a disk, as Azure manages the storage accounts behind the scenes. This level of abstraction reduces customer’s maintenance burden significantly. Furthermore, managed disks provide numerous advantages over unmanaged disks, such as better reliability, scalability, greater storage capacity, bursting, shared disks, and more. If you use unmanaged disks, you should start planning your migration now. Migrate your data from Azure unmanaged disk storage to managed disks before September 30, 2025. Page blobs will not be affected by this change. Required action To avoid service disruptions, review pricing and follow the steps to migrate your Windows or Linux virtual machines to managed disks before 30 September 2025. However, cybercriminals behind recent ransomware attacks have now shifted their focus to businesses. When it comes to preventing ransomware attacks, the No. 1 tip is to back up all your data and make sure you do a test restore. However, even with the latest-generation firewalls and antivirus on all desktops, ransomware can still get into a network.
