Good Luck!Deborah O'Brien shared thisThis week we’re proud to announce the launch of The Circular Future Fund – The Million Pound Challenge with Hubbub. This initiative will support trailblazing ideas and innovations that accelerate the transition towards a more circular economy. We’re looking for innovators with a pioneering new approach to challenge the outdated ‘make…use…throw away’ model. Whether it’s rethinking waste with new products or materials, finding creative ways to shift consumer mindsets or developing new business models and services. We want to hear from you. Applications for the fund open today and close on 9th January 2022. The winners will be announced in April and will be awarded grants of between £150,000 and £300,000 over one year. Ideas are welcomed from a range of organisations including academia, charities, start-ups, social enterprises and businesses. For a long time, I didn't let moments like this be simple. I thought being a good leader meant being reachable every hour of every day. Vacation, weekends, doesn't matter. Always one eye on the phone, always "just checking." Looking back, I think I had it backwards. I confused availability with dedication, when really, being fully present is what people actually need from a leader, not constant reachability. What I've learned since: social wellness isn't a perk you hand your team. It's something you have to model first. If I can't walk away, really walk away, without checking anything, why would anyone on my team believe it's safe for them to? So this is what it looks like now. No notifications. No "just one email." Just this moment, taken all the way. This month is a good reminder to actually take yours too. I'm proud to share that I've led a consortium to acquire NIO Cocktails from Distill Ventures and TGF Group, and I'm stepping in as CEO. NIO Cocktails was built on a simple, brilliant idea: genuine bar-quality cocktails, made with premium liquids, that you serve at home with nothing but ice. I now want to take that idea further than it's ever gone. New markets, new formats, new partners, and a few changes I'm excited to share over the coming weeks. Thank you to Distill Ventures and TGF Group for building NIO to this point and trusting us to carry it forward. And thank you to the team who've held this brand together through the transition. To everyone who's ever poured a NIO: the best is genuinely ahead. So here's my question to you. What's the one thing you'd want a premium ready to sip brand to do that nobody's done well yet? Deborah O'Brien reacted on thisDeborah O'Brien reacted on thisMy 6-year-old gives what she calls a two-handed hug: both arms, full squeeze, 20 seconds, no rush. When she does it, I feel like Superman. Visiting with my mom, I told her about the two-handed hug. She immediately asked, "Where's my two-handed hug?" So I got up to give her one. She stopped me. "I meant from my granddaughter." First learning lesson: not all hugs are created equal. Second learning lesson: Research suggests that a sustained hug (approx. 20 seconds) can lower cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone. Three seconds is a greeting. Twenty seconds can actually help you physically and mentally. That got me wondering: What's the workplace equivalent of a two-handed hug? I asked my colleague Daren Kemp and somehow ended up in a 60-second hug. (love you buddy!) I asked Amy Gadsby, and her answer was probably more scalable (and likely with less HR complications): 60 seconds of judgment-free listening. No fixing. No advice. No "Have you tried...?" Just listening. Most of us are wired to solve other people's problems. Sometimes people don't need a solution right away. They just need to feel heard. I’m not sure if the science on listening matches the science on hugs. But in a world where everyone seems to be rushing to the next meeting or multitasking during the current one, that undivided attention may be the rarest gift of all. My only question is why not #1? Those of us that know Kofi know just how talented he is as a marketer and how special he is as a human. Deborah O'Brien reacted on thisDeborah O'Brien reacted on thisIt's been a long (Roman) road over the past couple of years, following my husband to Italy, leaving the Civil Service and then working as a contractor but I'm delighted to say I've recently joined as a Partner in Korn Ferry's advisory business and will be based in Italy with frequent travel to the UK. I've named myself a BOLO (a Bologna/London commuter) which sounds so much more glamorous than it really is but I hope it means double the opportunity to meet up with colleagues and friends in both countries!

They don't see the anxiety of a general anaesthetic and a tenotomy at just three months old. They don't see the full-leg casts, or the boots and bar he wore every single night for 3 years. They don't see the wonderful volunteers at STEPS Charity, or our family, support groups and incredible medical professionals who walked every step of the club foot journey with us. For me, performance is every single stride taken. It's measured not in races won, but in everything it takes to get to the start line. Years of effort, discipline, sacrifice, the resilience to never give up, and all the people who support along the way. On this Olympic & Paralympic Day, I'm reminded that it's not just about celebrating performance. It's about celebrating everything that goes into it.
