The Innovator's Dilemma - Incubation, Scale, Speed 2 Market As the need for the UK Telecoms industry to urgently “monetise” the new services offered by all the Next Generation rollouts over the last 5-10 years…..it’s clear to all that this is far harder than many imagined and the announcements over the last few weeks around PXC, CFH, Gigaclear and G Networks reinforce that even larger scale operations are struggling in the current financial environment The large “Tier 1” scale players and partner bases who built their previous legacy platforms over 2 decades, now have to rebuild their platform’s systems and processes and skill bases recognising the “new reality of cash demands and lower ARPU’s” long term and to choose where they “stand and fight” – do they leave the field, do they continue to build infrastructure/systems and large service engines or do they become asset light, software driven and considerably more “fleet of foot” – Kees Hoogervorst’s recent article Europe in Transition explains this well https//lnkd.in/gMqWkBBY So what does that mean in the “here and now” ……during dot.com MCI realised that getting telecom services to market quickly was a massive challenge due to the time it took to build platforms/systems and large service engines, even today leveraging cloud, AI and software driven platforms will take time to build e2e platforms that will be taken credibly by customers whether your a legacy or new provider….…in another world/time MCI, therefore chose a 4 step approach: Incubate/Test/Learn/Scale This approach requires teams of people who understand in a “joined up way” the development journey, the approach to customer management through these cycles and have the hybrid cross functional programme & service skills who can hold onto the customers successfully, while transforming the business and its systems in parallel - many thought this process cumbersome, but in reality it saved time and money and mean't that when a service was really liked by the customer they knew it was worth scaling There are a few old Harvard texts for those that haven’t read them from the dot.com era worth a scan if you have time – Being Digital by Negroponte and The Innovators Dilemma by Christensen ……the market is accelerating back to “Mouse & Dog Years” and those that survive will find the right balance between incubation/scale and decide on the wider business model quickly and have the right skills to face into this incredibly exciting challenge sString and its partners are here to help, please reach out as needed The Clock Is Ticking

AI in broadband has entered 2026 with a very different energy compared to last year. What felt experimental in 2023 and became increasingly promising in 2024 has now become a central pillar of how networks are optimised by operators and experienced by customers. From automated troubleshooting to intelligent service orchestration, the likes of Agentic-AI have enormous potential in our sector. But AI’s impact will only ever be as good as the data that is fed into our networks. High-quality data helps broadband networks sense, plan and act. Data accuracy will lay the foundations for autonomous networks but without trusted data collection, even the most advanced algorithms will fail. It is critical that telecom providers get their data modelling right before making investment into AI. A key strength of the Broadband Forum over the last 15 years has been standardising data modelling for proactive, customer-focused service delivery. Infrastructure coverage is now approaching 75% of EU households (and close to €120 billion invested), with strong momentum in countries like Spain, Portugal, and France, while markets such as Germany and the UK are accelerating investments to close the digital divide. The rollout of FTTH and the migration from copper are key strategies, especially as new use cases like 5G, cloud, and smart cities demand robust, low-latency connections.
