Kathryn Davis FTMI shared thisWhat a glorious start to the day. The new museum interpretation is quite something, telling a people-centric SS Great Britain story, looking at the global impact of its voyages and the impact. After all, this was the ship that changed the world. If you've already visited, it's time to go back and learn more, or if you have never visited, you're really in for a treat. Shani's speech was a real inspirational moment - congratulations everyoneKathryn Davis FTMI shared this183 years after she was launched from the Great Western Dockyard, the SS Great Britain has a new story to tell. This morning we welcomed 120 guests – members, Trustees, local and national press, and friends of Bristol Dockyards - to celebrate the opening of the SS Great Britain Experience museum. Project Manager Kate Rambridge reflected on the museum's new chapter: "The most important thing we've kept is a fascination with all the stories this ship still carries. Since 2020, our team has included new researchers from Bristol's communities - we support them to ask their own questions, and to find the sources and skills to explore them." Kate thanked four of the community researchers whose work now features in the museum. Between them, they've uncovered stories that reshape how the ship's history is told: Ben Rickard has given new insight into the working communities who built her; Souima Seradj discovered a North African regiment who travelled aboard to Crimea in 1856; Tarjinder Kaur is researching the ship's role carrying troops to India in 1857; and Shani Whyte has uncovered stories of the people of colour whose histories are entwined with the ship's own. The museum opens to the public on Saturday 18 July. Come and see the stories uncovered by Ben, Souima, Tarjinder and Shani in person: www.bristoldockyards.org/ #Bristol #VisitBristol #Museum #NewMuseum #Heritage #Community

Kathryn Davis FTMI shared thisLast Friday, I had the privilege of presenting an award at the Bristol Young Heroes Awards. It was the first time of attending, and the tears started within the first award with incredible stories of young people doing amazing things in challenging circumstances. In a world where things can often seen so hopeless, all the nominees represented hope and joy for the future. Congratulations to all those nominated, their parents, carers, family and support network who were so proud it was palpable. I am lucky to attend a number of events like this, and quite honestly the best behaved audience I have ever been a part of, which was quite special. I am completely in awe of the brilliant Amy Kington and the work of the team and thank you for inviting me to be a small part of that celebration. #BYHA2026 Vivienne Kennedy Jenny Foster Louisa Briggs Sarah Bentley Donna Speed Peaches Golding OBE CStJ James Durie

Kathryn Davis FTMI shared thisI am so excited that this critical part of sporting history will be featured in the new museum. Anyone with an interest in cricket really should come and discover this fascinating story - alongside many others. Neil Priscott Richard Gould Holly Crane Katie Griffin Becs LeachKathryn Davis FTMI shared thisAs Bristol prepares to host six fixtures of the ICC T20 Women's Cricket World Cup later this month, there's another cricket story worth knowing: one that began aboard SS Great Britain over 160 years ago. In 1862, a photograph was taken in Australia. It shows the first 'All England' cricket team to tour the country. SS Great Britain took them there in October 1861. The tour was the brainchild of two Melbourne-based businessmen: caterers and wine merchants Felix William Spiers and Christopher Pond. The sport was growing in Australia, so Spiers and Pond invited leading English cricketers to tour the country. Twelve men signed up, named 'The All-England Eleven'. Each player received payment of £150 (worth about £7,000 today), first class passage to Australia aboard the SS Great Britain, plus all expenses covered. The ship's cricket heritage also runs deep locally. Among our collection is a commemorative cricket ball awarded to Bristol-born cricketing legend E.M. Grace in 1864. Grace travelled aboard the SS Great Britain for the England team’s second tour to Australia in 1863. Also on display is commissioned artwork from Fiona Clarke – her cricketing ancestors were coached by Charles Lawrence, who travelled to Australia via the ship. Fiona's artwork reflects on her ancestor's experiences and explores themes of migration, home and connection. See Fiona Clarke’s piece, the E.M. Grace commemorative cricket ball and a plethora of other stories not told before, in our new museum, opening its doors on 18th July 2026. Kathryn Davis FTMI liked thisKathryn Davis FTMI liked thisA fantastic event on Wednesday morning to officially launch Bristol Dockyards and open the newly revamped museum. It’s a bold, fresh rename and rebrand, which has caused a stir, but as CEO, Andrew Edwards said: “As you can see…the SS Great Britain is still here!” I love the way that the new museum tells the story of so many people who travelled on the SSGB around so many different countries and continents, as well as celebrating Brunel and his revolutionary engineering. Well worth a visit! Congratulations to the Bristol Dockyards team.

Kathryn Davis FTMI liked thisKathryn Davis FTMI liked thisDriving growth in visits and spend from #China and tourism’s role in building friendships, cultural understanding and people-to-people connections was in the spotlight as our CEO Patricia Yates joined a reception focused on boosting tourism ties between Anhui Province in #China and the #UK. ✈️ Great also to hear from Visit Peak District and Derbyshire MD Jo Dilley and Visit West CEO Kathryn Davis FTMI about the strong destination partnerships they are building with Anhui Province - driving growth into our regional destinations. Really encouraging too to hear first-hand how our expert team in China, alongside our recent trade mission to #Chengdu, have been pivotal in strengthening these connections - from bringing top buyers in China together with British suppliers and destinations - to how expanded airline connectivity into key regional gateways such as #Manchester is boosting growth. Many thanks to Li Zhang, Director of the China National Tourist Office, and to Mr Sun Yong, Vice Governor of Anhui Province for the invitation, the opportunities to network and speak to media about Britain's tourism offer and our 'Starring GREAT Britain' screen tourism campaign 🎬 and to learn about Anhui's stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage and visitor experiences. China is an incredibly important visitor market for us. We are forecasting more than 590,000 visits this year, generating an estimated £1.1 billion for our economy. Kathryn Davis FTMI liked thisKathryn Davis FTMI liked thisCulture Jobs just passed 15,000 followers on LinkedIn 🥳 - so I thought now might be a good time to share an update on how it's going. Firstly, the positives: • 15,000 LinkedIn followers, growing at c.1,500 per month. That's partly due to organic reach, but also paid LinkedIn ads costing a couple of hundred pounds per month. • About 20,000 monthly website visitors. Between them, they view about 80,000 pages per month. Pages per visitor and return visitors are up, largely thanks to there being an increasing number of jobs on the site. • Approaching 3,000 email subscribers (plus an unknown number of people who have set job alerts), growing at about 20 per day. I started asking for location and job preferences a month or two ago, so about a third of those have given some information about what they're looking for. • 138 different organisations have posted so far - everyone from small arts charities to the National Gallery, Royal Albert Hall, the V&A, Buckingham Palace, NLHF and other big names. Another large employer in the sector has also said they're keen to trial a few roles, which is exciting! In terms of challenges: • Managing the website solo! It generally runs smoothly, but sometimes glitches happen. At the moment, there's one that means I need to do more manual work on getting listings live than I would if everything was working perfectly. • Balancing admin, marketing and technical work. It's easy to get distracted by adding a new feature (I just added bundles, for example) and realise I haven't posted from the LinkedIn page for a few days. • Surprise costs! The map used to be on more pages of the website. Now it's on selected pages. That's because I was hit with a surprise £120 bill for the map API when traffic increased. • Searching for freelance marketing work (or a new marketing job) at the same time. Culture Jobs is a good side business at the moment, but it's not yet a full-time salary. So, if you need any marketing or website support, please get in touch! Overall though, I'm pleased with how it's going, I'm enjoying it, and I think it has potential to grow from here. 🤞

Kathryn Davis FTMI liked thisKathryn Davis FTMI liked thisYesterday was a wonderful reminder of the power of partnership with Visit Peak District and Derbyshire proudly representing our destination both here in Derbyshire and in London with guests from China. Our Managing Director, Jo Dilley, was delighted to be in London representing Visit Peak District & Derbyshire at the "Beautiful Anhui Engages with the World" tourism promotion event, alongside Patricia Yates, CEO of VisitBritain, Kathryn Davis FTMI, CEO of Visit West, and tourism leaders from across the UK and China. The event celebrated the enduring friendship between the Peak District & Derbyshire and Anhui Province; a relationship we have been proud to develop since 2023 through our knowledge transfer partnership. Thanks to the dedication and support of Dennis Hu of Make it China, this collaboration continues to create exciting opportunities for tourism, cultural exchange and shared learning. It was especially encouraging to continue conversations about future collaborations, including potential opportunities to work with Chatsworth on cultural exchanges and exhibitions, helping to showcase Derbyshire's heritage and world-class visitor offer to new international audiences. At the same time, our Deputy Director, Lindsay Rae, joined colleagues and partners at the Peak District National Park in Bakewell for the launch of the 75th Anniversary Report celebrating the UK's first four National Parks. It was a privilege to hear inspiring contributions from Mary Creagh CBE MP , Minister for Nature, Andrew McCloy, author of the report, National Parks England, and a representative from the Welsh Government, all reflecting on the extraordinary legacy of our National Parks and their role in shaping our future. One of the most memorable moments of the afternoon came when Mary Creagh MP, Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward and John Whitby MP for the Derbyshire Dales, led everyone in singing Happy Birthday to the UK's first four National Parks – a fitting and joyful celebration of 75 years of protecting these incredible landscapes that mean so much to so many. Whether celebrating 75 years of our National Parks or strengthening international relationships that will benefit our visitor economy for years to come, both events reflected something we care deeply about at Visit Peak District & Derbyshire: bringing people together, sharing knowledge and creating partnerships that make a lasting difference. Thank you to everyone who made both events such a success. We look forward to continuing these conversations and building on these valued relationships. Most of the costs would be defrayed within the many offers of help and support from the city.
The key points in favour of the Bristol bid are:
Creation of a wide and secure platform for greater involvement of community groups
- Building a bridge to the non-Wikipedian community and inspiring a next generation of volunteers
- Many local groups have already sponsored Wikimedia UK events in Bristol and will do so again.
- Many of the supporting institutions will take some of the workload off the volunteers
- Favorable accommodation rates at University residences
- Preferential deals for block-booked flights through selected airlines
- Bristol's successful experience in running self-financing events similar to Wikimania
- Major commitment from groups across the city, providing local community involvement and support
