Elizabeth Walker - fantastic ally for women and neurodiverse talent; Green Park are lucky to have you as part of their fantastic team, who remain a driving force for DE&I in all it’s forms across their client portfolio. Almost as lucky as we are to have you as the most amazing wife and mum, and the driving force behind everything that is good about our little family. It’s been a tough year but your energy and dedication to both your paid and unpaid roles remains a quiet inspiration. And to my future Lioness Niamh - so proud of the progress you’re making at school and beyond after some pretty significant challenges and upheaval over the last 18 months. I’ve so enjoyed getting involved in coaching your football team the last few months and helping the next band of Lionesses coming through. Their dedication to improve, their tenacity, their camaraderie and inclusion of new talent into the group is great to observe. Never stop being you Niamh and remember the sky is the limit in terms of your hopes and ambitions. So on IWD two examples, that despite the obstacles and biases that still exist in most walks of life - it doesn’t take grandiose gestures and massive financial investments to Inspire Inclusion - it needs everyone, everywhere to take small but meaningful action, to call out inequality whenever they see it, for women to be given the same platform, the same stage, the same office, the same pitch…..and then watch them slay every day !!

Stuart Walker reacted on thisStuart Walker reacted on thisEighteen years ago today, I walked through the doors at Capco with absolutely no idea what a consultant was. I was a Murex specialist, excited by the prospect of working with different banks and solving interesting problems. I never imagined where that decision would lead. Today I’ll be catching up with my client project team spread across the UK, US and Brazil. We will be discussing our proof of concept to demonstrate the value of data products for wholesale lending, the operating model and processes for a business-aligned data function in credit card risk, and rolling out our Augmented Data Lineage toolkit to reduce the manual effort involved in extracting application lineage. I’ll also be joining a working session with colleagues developing our Agentic Data Management offering, preparing for upcoming client workshops, and meeting with our UK DEI Lead to discuss our accessibility playlist and how we continue to promote digital inclusion in the workplace. This evening, instead of joining the Pride line dancing session, I’ll be spending time with my family. Watching the next episode of Sweet Tooth with my daughter, while my son enjoys a well-earned break after the intensity of his GCSEs, and inevitably being asked by my husband for a little project management advice on his latest work project. Looking at that list, what strikes me isn’t how busy it is—it’s how varied it is. Over the last 18 years I’ve had the opportunity to work across an incredible range of projects, industries and challenges. I’ve partnered with senior executives to establish and transform functions, led large-scale change programmes, and discovered passions I never expected—including building a community around neurodiversity and disability inclusion at Capco. I’ve also built a family, made lifelong friends, and been given opportunities I could never have imagined when I first walked through those doors. If the person who walked into Capco 18 years ago could see my diary today, I don’t think she’d know what to make of it. She felt that everyone around her knew more than she did and wondered how she could ever belong in a world like this. What she didn’t know was that she didn’t need all the answers. She just needed the courage to walk through the door. Looking back now, I’m in awe of her for doing exactly that.

Actually I’ll be spending next week on the Camino trail walking from Santiago de Compostela to Cape Fisterra (historically known to the Romans as the "end of the earth") In a choice between… - spending a week with drunk people talking about mostly scam adverts that 99% of real people will never see. OR - spending a week walking in fresh air in Northern Spain. ….I decided the latter was much more useful and productive for my mental health & thought processes. It's best to give feedback regularly so that people know when they are on track vs. off course and can correct while the deviations are still small. If you increase someone's responsibilities, you should increase their compensation. Regular feedback and pay for performance. Two simple principles for happier, more engaged people.

Surprise, surprise, the huge fall in May’s UK payrolls was revised up. It always looked wildly out of line with business surveys and other job market signals. Payrolls now drop 100k in the first half of the year compared with a previously estimated 230K drop. Include the likely upward revision to June payrolls to a 12K drop and the trend in job growth is now turning up. The picture is far from rosy, with payrolls still falling. But that should pass now that firms seem to be completing their adjustment to payroll tax and minimum wage hikes. The DMP survey, for instance, reported a jump in employment intentions in June and the ONS BICS survey shows sharply recovering small business hiring after it tanked in April. The question is, why would anyone believe payrolls even now. The data are massively revised, and in a predictable way. The payrolls data exclude the self-employed whose numbers, as best we can tell because most ONS data these days are unreliable, are rising quickly now that the Chancellor has raised the incentives to work in a way that does not incur employee NICS. Workforce jobs and LFS employee numbers are much stronger than payrolls and rising comfortably. Jobless claims are down 4K three-months-on-three-months and redundancies are still low. The MPC seem to have painted themselves into a corner, after being spooked by previous large falls in the highly unreliable payrolls data. They've led the market to believe that a rate cut is needed because of weak employment. The MPC probably have to follow through now, but they shouldn't. Inflation is 160bp above target and will next drop below 3% in April. The MPC will likely end up missing their target for nearly six years straight by the end of next year. Wage growth is far too high to deliver 2% inflation, at 4.9% in the latest data. PAYE median pay has stabilised at about 5% annualised, and surveys suggest the pace of wage and price disinflation has slowed. Long-term household inflation expectations are running over 100bp above average. If the MPC knew these data a month ago would Governor Bailey and Dave Ramsden have shifted their language dovishly? And why didn't they anticipate highly predictable revisions a month ago?
