“We do what we do because of our partnerships.” — Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, in recognition of the Mastercard Foundation’s support through the Africa Climate Collaborative at the University of Ghana at the commissioning of the upgraded High-Performance Computing (HPC) system. Initially installed in 2017 by the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) - University of Ghana under the World Bank ACE Project, the Collaborative has now committed USD 500,000 to renew and upgrade the facility, strengthening the University’s advanced computational capacity to support research and innovation in climate science and other computationally intensive disciplines. #AfricaClimateCollaborative #FromAmbitionToAction #ACC2026 #YouthClimateAction

Across Northern Ghana, indigenous crops are being reimagined through women-led innovation to build stronger, more resilient food systems. Founded in 2024 and based in Tamale, GirlFarmsHub is transforming underutilised indigenous crops into nutritious, value-added products to advance climate-smart agriculture, reduce post-harvest losses, and create sustainable livelihoods for women and smallholder farmers. In response to the IWD 2026 Call for Proposals, it presented a regenerative agriculture solution: building a women-led Miracle Berry value chain for climate resilience and economic empowerment in Northern Ghana. The initiative seeks to support young women farmers in the Nanton District to integrate miracle berry cultivation into their existing farming systems using climate-smart agroforestry practices. It will also establish a Miracle Berry Processing and Training Centre in the Sagnarigu District to train women in processing, value addition, and entrepreneurship, enabling them to access both local and export markets. By developing a women-led value chain around an underutilised indigenous crop, the initiative will promote biodiversity conservation, generate sustainable incomes, and support the emergence of new women-led enterprises. A greener future starts with bold ideas and native seeds. Today, our spotlight is on Eco Seed Balls, one of the award-winning initiatives under the International Women's Day (IWD) 2026 Call for Proposals. Eco Seed Balls is a Ghanaian social enterprise founded in April 2025. It was established to reduce methane emissions from food waste and restore Ghana’s degraded lands, Ramsar sites, and mining communities. Its mission is to make reforestation cheaper, faster, and more inclusive by producing biochar-enhanced seed balls from landfill food waste and native tree seeds. In response to the Call, Eco Seed Balls presented a circular climate solution: converting urban food waste into biochar, then rolling native seeds into it to create low-cost seed balls for large-scale restoration. The initiative aims to restore 50+ hectares of degraded land and sequester 50,000 metric tonnes of CO₂ over three years, while creating 100+ green jobs for youth, women, and persons with disabilities. By linking waste reduction to reforestation and building revenue through biochar sales, carbon credits, and a franchise model, the initiative is designed to scale a women-led solution that heals land and strengthens livelihoods at the same time. Celebrating the power of women, innovation, and climate action! 🌍✨ As part of the International Women’s Day 2026 commemoration, the Africa Climate Collaborative at the University of Ghana, in partnership with Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy (CEGENSA) - University of Ghana, provided a platform for organizations, groups, and individuals to showcase innovative climate solutions and pitch for grant opportunities. The event brought together passionate innovators, entrepreneurs, and climate advocates whose ideas demonstrated the immense potential of locally driven solutions to address pressing environmental and climate challenges while promoting inclusivity. Participants presented projects spanning climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods, environmental conservation, clean energy, and community empowerment, highlighting the critical role that inclusive innovation plays in building a sustainable future. Following a highly competitive pitching session, three outstanding teams were selected to receive grants of up to GHS 100,000 to develop further and scale their initiatives. Their innovative ideas stood out for their potential impact, sustainability, and ability to create meaningful change within their communities. Importantly, the journey does not end there for the other participants. All remaining teams will take part in a curated capacity-building programme designed to strengthen their project concepts, enhance their fundraising readiness, and equip them with the knowledge and tools needed to attract future investment and support. Through mentorship, training, and guidance, they will be better positioned to transform their ideas into impactful climate solutions. This initiative reflects our shared commitment to fostering innovation, empowering women and underrepresented groups, and creating opportunities for climate entrepreneurs to thrive. This initiative marks a pivotal step in our mission to cultivate a robust, youthful workforce for Africa's emerging green economy. By equipping hub trainers and facilitators with our specialised entrepreneurship manuals—developed by the Entrepreneurship and Innovation work stream at the University of Ghana—we are creating a sustainable pipeline of expertise. These facilitators are now ready to share this critical knowledge with young African entrepreneurs, helping them develop climate-friendly business models and turn existing enterprises into sustainable, resilient operations. This train-the-trainer approach helps embed our commitment to climate action in the next generation of African businesses.
