The idea for 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘵 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴 came from seeing the same challenge repeatedly: individuals and organizations had invested in Microsoft Copilot licenses but were using only a small fraction of what was available. Many people simply didn’t understand the different capabilities, how they fit together, or what was happening behind the scenes. I wrote this book to help readers navigate that landscape, identify meaningful use cases, and get more value from the tools they already have. Working with Apress was a wonderful experience. They gave me the freedom to shape the book in my own voice while providing guidance and support whenever I needed it. It took me a little while to find my rhythm, but once I did, the writing began to flow. 𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸? “After years of watching organizations spend billions on perimeter defenses, firewalls, and biometrics, only to be breached through a tired analyst clicking a phishing link at 2am, it became impossible to ignore the elephant in the room: we were securing machines while leaving the human brain almost entirely undefended. My research into #neuroethics, cognitive vulnerability, and behavioral patterns kept revealing the same uncomfortable truth—the breach almost always begins in the mind before it reaches the network. Stress narrows attention. Burnout degrades judgment. Emotional priming overrides even trained responses. These aren't soft observations, they're measurable, neurological phenomena.  The book became a way of saying ‘there is a richer, more honest science available to us.’ #Neuroscience has mapped how decisions are made under pressure, how deception exploits cognitive shortcuts, how fatigue reshapes risk perception. Every CISO has lived it. The person who bypassed controls not because they were malicious, but because they were overwhelmed, distracted, or socially engineered through pure psychological precision. Traditional tools log the event after it happens. Neuro-cybersecurity asks ‘what was happening in that person's decision-making architecture in the seconds before they clicked?’ The simplest way to explain is this: your firewall monitors packets. Neuro-cybersecurity monitors patterns—the behavioral, cognitive, and physiological signals that precede a compromised decision. Behavioral #biometrics is already a familiar entry point for many teams: the way someone types, moves a mouse, or navigates a system carries a neural signature unique enough to detect anomalies before credentials are even challenged. From there, the conversation naturally expands. Neural #authentication using EEG-based brain signatures. AI systems that account for human cognitive load rather than assuming perfect vigilance. None of this replaces their existing stack, it fills the gap that their existing stack was never designed to address. But wanting to write a book and actually writing one are different things, and I never quite started.   Then in July 2022 I lost my Bengal cat, Ade. He was beside me through every late night of my career—on the desk, on my lap, watching the diagrams take shape on the screen, during the darkest moments in my life. After he was gone, I needed somewhere to put everything I was feeling, and the book became that place. I wrote it for him. He's on the cover. Every page was written with him in mind, and all of my royalties go to charities helping cats in distress—so that something good for other animals comes out of losing him.   It turned a technical book into the most personal thing I've ever made. There is no spare time for a 740-page book hiding in a full-time job; you have to take it from somewhere, and for me that was evenings, weekends, and a lot of early mornings over almost two years. I train daily and I kept that, because the writing needed the counterweight. Everything else flexed around it.   What kept me going was that the book had a reason beyond me. On the hard nights, I wasn't writing to hit a word count. I was writing for Ade, to remember what I learned from him about ‘resilience in life,’ and for the cats the proceeds would help. When I started seeing some of the works that students and others produced that are end-to-end done by AI tools, I was alarmed.   Just a few years ago, these students were using AI tools. Now they have shifted to completely trusting them, completely delegating the whole task to them, and often not even understanding or questioning what was generated through that execution. These AI agents were making all the choices on behalf of that student: what to search for that information, how to find that information, how to synthesize, what to interpret from that, and how to present it.   Basically, everything. As an educator, that was quite troubling. These trends are happening all around us in all kinds of fields, and this was definitely a motivation for writing this book."   𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸?   “For me it was a balancing act between AI hype and AI fears. Both of those extremes often get attention and create a sensation in readers, but I wanted to not use something like that as a way to connect with my reader. I wanted to find my voice, which is, an AI pragmatist. I look at a problem that AI has or is causing, then think through what we can do here, not just to make AI better but to make ourselves better. To have more of a self-discovery through this process of inquiry.   And that has resulted in the structure you see in this book, where every chapter starts with a story, a real story where something goes wrong. Not just because of what AI has done, but because of how humans and society have deployed that AI or bought into the hype about that AI and what it can do. Then we unpack what happened, why it happened, and, more importantly, what we can do going forward. Perhaps the solution is to not use such AI at all, or maybe there are responsible ways to use it. Some days were exciting; others were relatively routine. But each session was very rewarding as it encouraged me to research comprehensively and think deeply about the basics, while also clarifying many concepts which I thought I already understood well.
