At Baptist Health, we've always been at the forefront of heart health, and we performed the first angioplasty in our area 45 years ago! ❤️ Dr. Joel Schrank (now retired) performed the successful procedure in 1981, and since then, we've done over 20,000 coronary interventions. An angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that opens narrowed or blocked arteries by threading a small balloon through a catheter and inflating it to compress plaque against the artery walls, restoring blood flow. Technology has improved dramatically since 1981, and the coronary interventions are far simpler and more effective now. 🚨 Cyclospora is a parasite that has reached the First Coast after causing cases of extreme stomach discomfort across the country. 🚨 We posted about this on Sunday, and you had a lot of questions, so we sat down with Shalika Katugaha, MD, system director of Infectious Diseases for Baptist Health, to discuss: ❗ The most common sources of cyclosporiasis. ❗ Symptoms of cyclosporiasis. ❗ How to best prevent cyclosporiasis. The good news? According to Dr. Katugaha, you don't have to ditch all your fruits and vegetables, which are important for maintaining a balanced diet. In fact, here are the steps she recommends taking to stay safe: ✅ Cooking vegetables, which will kill the parasite. ✅ Washing produce with a brush under running water, which can help get the parasite out of bumps and grooves. ✅ Thoroughly washing the peels or rinds of fruits before cutting into them to reduce the risk of transferring cyclospora to the fruit’s flesh. Congratulations to Jeannie Blaylock on completing her third breast cancer surgery! Jeannie has been spreading the word about the importance of Buddy Check 12 for years, and she recently took the time to tell the story of the Kramer family and how Jessica Kramer’s own baby girl, Dakota, performed her own inadvertent buddy check! Jessica was rocking Dakota to sleep when she noticed that whenever Dakota’s head touched her breast, it hurt. She performed a self-exam and discovered a lump that was diagnosed as stage 2 breast cancer. She was 32 years old at the time. 333 days later, Jessica finished her cancer treatment at Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center to the cheers of her coworkers at Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and her husband Matt’s coworkers at Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.
