A year ago, Jimmy Feeman came on my podcast as my first interview guest. He had been a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree at 23 for building a national dessert brand called No Baked Cookie Dough. At the time, he was thinking about acquiring his next business. Today's episode is Jimmy coming back. He bought one. Silver Creek is a siding and roofing subcontractor in Helena, Montana. Brock, the seller, was an operator in his 40s who had started a second business and was ready to hand this one off cleanly. Jimmy did almost everything most first-time buyers would say is impossible. He closed at under 3x SDE on a healthy, growing business. He went to 8 banks before one would underwrite it. The reason most of them passed was not financing. It was that Jimmy did not have "industry experience." He brought in a business partner, a Navy SEAL named John who had operated in the RV rental industry. John's credit profile got the loan unstuck. The down payment came from John's military Thrift Savings Plan loan. Jimmy and John put approximately zero dollars of personal cash into the deal itself. Today's episode is Jimmy walking through the whole arc. From "I want to buy something" to "I'm 30 days in and figuring out why the prior owner was paying subcontractors on the 15th of the same month." Business Buying for Financial Independence.

Is anyone out there an expert on local distributors? I want to crowdsource a list of small food distributors across all 50 states. Retail focused, foodservice focused, literally anything at all. All help is appreciated. I will publish the list on here afterward.
