As wildfire risk grows across our region, we’re taking proactive steps to help protect the communities we serve. Our approach combines system upgrades, advanced technology and strong collaboration with local safety partners. We’re investing in tools like weather stations that provide real-time data on temperature, humidity and wind conditions — giving our teams the insights they need to act quickly and make informed decisions during high-risk periods. Each spring, ospreys return to Southern Colorado's lakes and rivers to nest and raise their young. Occasionally, those nesting sites are located on utility infrastructure. To help protect wildlife and maintain reliable service, Black Hills Energy recently relocated three osprey nests from utility poles to purpose-built nesting platforms in the Penrose, Florence and Pueblo areas. The platforms were installed near the original nesting locations, and follow-up monitoring confirmed the birds have returned. This work supports our Avian Protection Plan and established wildlife safety practices, helping reduce risks to protected bird species while minimizing the potential for wildlife-related outages. Environmental stewardship, safety and reliability go hand in hand. Projects like these demonstrate how thoughtful planning can support both the communities we serve and the natural resources that make Colorado unique. Today, we honor Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, freedom finally reached Galveston, Texas, more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This day invites us to reflect on the resilience, achievements, and lasting contributions of the African American community, while recognizing the significance of this milestone in our nation’s history.
