Great day in Salinas introducing local strawberry growers to the autonomous Amiga Max in action. 🍓 Equipped with an OnTarget Spray Systems electrostatic sprayer and running on diesel-hybrid power, it's changing what's possible in the field: Lower fuel costs, up to 80% less chemical use, 50% fewer spray hours during critical application windows, more acres covered per day. We also demoed a configuration of the Amiga Flex as a harvest assist platform to keep pace with crews row by row, cutting downtime from carrying and dumping so they can harvest more per hour. The Amiga Max is an autonomy-first, diesel-hybrid electric platform built to run a full spray shift on a fraction of the fuel and a fraction of the CapEx. Its electric rate controller cuts chemical use by applying product only where it's needed, shutting off on turns, row ends, and skips to protect canopy and avoid over-application near sensitive blocks. Every acre is logged automatically, giving you full spray traceability and compliance-ready reporting without lifting a pen. All at roughly a third the labor cost. One operator can run an autonomous fleet across multiple blocks from the Bonsai app. Start it, monitor it, adjust the rate, refill it, and move it to the next block. This is the capital of robotics! 🌁 Silicon Valley is home to so many physical AI companies that you could spend a month visiting them and still not see even 10% of them (trust me, I tried). It took me 3x to create this map as it did to create any other. And the truth is, it's still incomplete. Let’s see why this is the case. So, the Bay Area is the world's leading ecosystem for robotics startups, bringing together top AI talent, top universities, experienced founders, and unmatched access to capital. The region is anchored by Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley, two of the world's top universities for AI and robotics. They produce a constant stream of researchers, founders, and breakthrough technologies. The Bay Area is also home to many of the companies shaping the future of robotics and AI, including Figure, Physical Intelligence, and major AI labs such as OpenAI. This concentration of talent makes it easy for startups to recruit experienced engineers and collaborate with leaders in embodied AI. Not mentioning that it is also home to leaders such as NVIDIA Robotics, whose headquarters and leadership in AI chips power much of today's robotics revolution, and Tesla, whose work on autonomous driving and humanoid robots has created a deep pool of robotics, AI, and manufacturing talent. Perhaps its biggest advantage is access to capital and ambition. The Bay Area has the world's deepest network of venture capital firms, serial entrepreneurs, and technical leaders who are willing to fund bold, long-term robotics companies. The future of agricultural robotics may not be specialized machines, but specialized tools built on a common platform. Bonsai Robotics' Amiga is built around a modular architecture that allows sensors, instruments, and software to be adjusted depending on the work being performed. Agricultural operations aren't static. Seeding, cultivation, scouting, spraying, hauling, and phenotyping place different demands on equipment throughout the growing season. Rather than deploying a different robot for every job, the same platform can adapt as operational requirements change. The value of that approach extends beyond flexibility. As new sensors, implements, and autonomous capabilities are developed, they can be added to the platform without redesigning the machine itself. fun test: if an elephant steps in front of an autonomous tractor, does the tractor stop? with the generalization ability of the Bonsai Robotics world model, we can answer this question even though we’ve never seen it happen. one of the trickiest parts of agriculture is how brutal the importance of semantic understanding is. most robots only touch solid objects with their tires or their gripper. a solid object making contact with the robot body is always a failure. semantics are relevant, but not the star of the show. agriculture is completely opposite. robots have to confidently push through low hanging branches in orchards and tall grasses used as cover crops. at the same time, they have to always stop for safety critical events like people and vehicles in their path. during spring and summer, vineyard shoots grow rapidly, meaning any vineyard robot will have to confidently differentiate every shoot and leaf from every obstacle. the sad truth is that most robots are never able to make this distinction reliably. the ones that “seem” to work often have just overfit to seen obstacles. it sounds crazy, but they wouldn’t stop if an elephant stepped in front of the vehicle. no matter how huge the elephant is, it doesn’t look like any obstacle the model has seen before! all of this changes with the bonsai world model. we can train and test on an infinite number of interesting (if maybe implausible!) scenarios. our models can learn from a body of experience so vast, not even the most dedicated operator could see it all in a single human lifetime. that, I would argue, is what true robot intelligence looks like.
