I had the opportunity to present at the Digital Collegium Minnesota Regional yesterday, and it was such a great time! My session explored why higher ed social teams don't need to create more content, and how to build smarter systems around what's already being created across the student journey. The questions from the room made it even better. There's nothing like an engaged audience to remind you why these conversations matter. But honestly, the best part was the people. Catching up with familiar faces and meeting some incredible new ones reminded me just how warm and connected this community is. See you at the next one!

I gave a 10-minute lightning talk at Digital Collegium last week. The opening keynote made essentially the same argument. Melanie Lindahl from UT Austin kicked things off with a talk about what users don't say out loud, such as the friction in forms, the students who leave without finishing a task, and the small moments that make someone feel like they don't belong. Her framing was simple. Your users are telling you something. Most of them just aren't saying it out loud. I followed later in the day with a lightning talk on the gap between passing an accessibility audit and actually being accessible. Different framing, same problem. When two independent talks at a conference address the same gap (the distance between what your system does and what your users experience), it's worth paying attention to. I'm writing another post about it for tomorrow. Beyond those two, Afton Northrup from the University of Minnesota gave a sharp talk on AI-generated content. She showed a Volvo AI commercial that was polished, confident, and said absolutely nothing about the brand. Then a Prius spot that was light, specific, and let the car speak for itself. "Polished, confident, and empty" is a lens I'm going to keep using. The Minneapolis light rail, for what it's worth, is the nicest public transit I've been on. Clean, fast, comfortable, with a stop right next to the conference venue. After the conference, a few of us ended the day at Matt's Bar (home of the original Jucy Lucy). Good conversation, good burger. The conference leans higher-ed digital and runs annually. If that's your world, worth knowing about.
