Across six levels of a steel mill, River City Metal Fabrication LLC scanned a chute system spanning nearly 400 feet (122 meters), floor by floor. Ductwork and chutes get field-cut so many times that they no longer match the original drawings, and manual measurement left parts to be reworked on-site. That pushed vice president Candace Forbes to spend nearly a year researching 3D scanning for a dusty, hot plant. A competing system required targets, a laptop, and about 45 minutes of setup. Artec Leo, a fully wireless 3D scanner with onboard processing, needed none of that. Forbes bought it through Digitize Designs, an Artec 3D Ambassador in the US, to support Nucor Corporation. "The scanner gives me the ability to detect leaks, wear in materials, capture complex geometries, verify dimensions, and streamline fabrication workflows, ensuring Nucor receives precise, reliable, and efficient service." On-site, she works as if shooting a video, with real-time scan quality on the touchscreen. She processes in Artec Studio, then continues in Geomagic or SolidWorks.
