    When a hurricane or wildfire hits, news coverage informs the public, but it doesn't tell a claims team which of its insured locations actually sits inside the footprint. In a new piece for Carrier Management, EigenRisk Co-Founder and President Deepak Badoni argues that the teams who respond best, treat a catastrophe as three connected phases, not one scramble: 1. The planning done long before the event. 2. The monitoring that runs whether or not anything ever hits the book. 3. The claims response that follows once the footprint is known.   • US cities rank among the world's worst for air quality due to Canadian wildfire smoke. Smoke from hundreds of active Canadian wildfires has traveled more than a thousand miles into the US, pushing air quality into unhealthy to hazardous ranges from the Midwest through the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. More than 850 fires are burning across Canada, with over 100 still listed as out of control. At points this week, Chicago, Detroit, and Minneapolis have ranked among the worst cities in the world for air quality, and New York City has seen hazy, orange-tinted skies and reduced visibility. Today the smoke is expected to push farther south and east, into Ohio, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.   • Most wildfire scores can tell you whether a location has burned before. The harder questions for an underwriter come next: how recently did it burn, how have the fuel conditions changed since, and is this particular property likely to survive the next event? Those are the questions Property Guardian's recurrence scoring is built to answer. It factors in time-aware fire history and fuel dynamics, paired with resiliency and mitigation data at the property level, so you're looking at how risk is actually evolving rather than a snapshot of the past. We've partnered with Property Guardian to bring that intelligence into #EigenPrism, where it sits alongside the rest of your catastrophe data. For commercial property teams, that adds up to a few practical things: 1). Spotting elevated risk that static scores can miss. 2).     Two properties that are feet apart can get the same hazard score. One survives a wildfire. One is a total loss. That gap is the problem with proximity-based underwriting, and it's a costly one in a softening market where capacity is returning and more wildfire-exposed business is being written.
