What role can the workplace play in helping workers build stronger financial knowledge and financial capability? A new research report from the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation explores that question in depth. From the Break Room to the Bank: The Relationship Between Workplace-Based Financial Education and Financial Capability examines how workplace-based financial education is associated with financial knowledge, financial behaviors and broader financial capability — all issues that can affect everyday financial decision-making, long-term financial well-being and retirement preparedness. This research is especially timely as employers continue looking for practical ways to address worker financial stress, strengthen financial wellness strategies and better support overall workforce well-being. The report also offers important insight into who is participating in workplace-based financial education programs — and where there may be opportunities to expand reach and impact. For employers, benefits leaders and others focused on financial wellness, the findings help shed light on how workplace-based financial education may fit into broader efforts to support workers in meaningful, practical ways. As health care affordability challenges persist and new technologies reshape the consumer experience, understanding how individuals make decisions about coverage, spending and care has never been more important. As employers look for ways to manage rising health care costs, one challenge is becoming increasingly clear: more personalized health benefits can offer value, but they also add complexity. “Personalization of healthcare is becoming more prevalent, but it also makes implementation of benefit strategies much more complicated,” said Paul Fronstin, director of the health benefits research at the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Fronstin contributed his professional insight to a valuable new report from Fidelity Health Thought Leadership, “Softening the Blow: How Employers Can Reduce Rising Healthcare Costs.” The report examines strategies employers can consider to improve affordability through smarter plan design and vendor management, while also exploring macro trends driving today’s health care affordability challenges, cost-sharing approaches and plan management strategies.
