Where does your OEHS function sit in the org chart? It is one of the more overlooked questions in workplace safety, and one that may matter more than most organizations realize. I am excited to be presenting on exactly this at the 2026 NSC Safety Summit in Baltimore on Friday, May 8, 9:30–10:30 AM, alongside Carolyn Evemy, MA of the Campbell Institute at the National Safety Council: The Silent Structure: How Organizational Design Shapes the Influence, Communication and Effectiveness of OHS Departments Who the safety leader reports to, how resources are allocated, where OEHS sits relative to operations, legal, finance, HR, and leadership, these are not just administrative questions. They may be quietly determining how much impact your health and safety function actually has. This presentation draws on recent joint research led by Rachel Zisook, MS, CIH, Jennifer Sahmel, and myself at Insight Exposure & Risk Sciences and members of the Campbell Institute at the National Safety Council, exploring how organizational structure, often invisible and rarely discussed, shapes the visibility, influence, and support that OEHS professionals need to be effective. Questions we will dig into: -How do reporting lines shape safety priorities, accountability, and outcomes? -What does it mean when OEHS is structurally "present" but functionally sidelined? -How should structure evolve as organizations grow and face new challenges? -What does the evidence tell us, and where do the gaps remain? If you will be in Baltimore, come find us Friday morning. And if this topic resonates, I would love to connect. #NSCSafetySummit #EHS #WorkplaceSafety #SafetyLeadership #CampbellInstitute

We are excited to share Insight's latest publication, an evaluation of dermal exposures to PFAS compounds (popularly known as ‘forever chemicals’) recently published in Risk Analysis. Insight scientists Jonathan Heywood, MPH, DABT, Jennifer Sahmel, Stephanie Tack, MPH, Jason Lotter, CIH , Shannon H. Gaffney, PhD, MHS, CIH, FAIHA, and Scott Dotson, PhD, CIH, DABT, FAIHA comprehensively assessed both dermal exposure to, and uptake of PFAS in humans across the published literature, including 37 studies that evaluated exposures spanning from cosmetics and personal care products to clothing, textiles, indoor dust, and occupational and environmental sources. The results indicate that dermal PFAS exposures are generally well below 1 ng/kg-bw/day for most individuals and that the dermal exposure route contributes to a small fraction of total PFAS exposure, relative to ingestion and inhalation. This work provides a rigorous, dose-based foundation for evaluating the toxicological relevance of dermal PFAS exposures and identification of key data gaps to guide future research and risk assessment.
