📍 First time in Boston for Quantum.Tech World, and it turns out my family was loud, proud and got here a few hundred years ahead of me. I'm directly descended from James Franklin. If that name doesn't land, his younger brother's will. Benjamin Franklin is my 9th great-granduncle. I know, I'm like Spiderman with a daughter who looks like this MCU iteration's MJ 😜 🗞️ James was the printer. In 1721 he founded The New-England Courant, the first newspaper in the colonies that didn't answer to the authorities. He printed what he wanted, got jailed for it, and kept printing. A teenage Ben apprenticed in his shop and slipped essays under the door at night, since his big brother wasn't about to publish a kid. The family put words and ideas into the world whether or not anyone gave them permission. And Uncle Ben used pseudonyms because his brother wouldn't publish his op eds. There are also historical illustrations of them fist fighting 😆 If I find a gap between sessions, I want to walk it. It is America's birthday, after all. And my ancestors were some our midwives 🫡 Ben was born at 17 Milk Street and baptized across the street at the Old South Meeting House. His statue stands on School Street in front of Old City Hall, the first public statue of a person in this city, next to the mosaic marking the old Boston Latin School. James's print shop sat a block away at 17 Court Street, marked today with a plaque. Their parents rest under the tall Franklin obelisk in the Granary Burying Ground. Ben himself is buried in Philadelphia, which is a longer story. ⚛️ And here I am hosting the inventors, founders, pioneers, and leaders building what comes next. Good food. Good drinks. New publications going to print. New products going to market. Turns out I'm in the family business 😉🍻 🪙 One of our families go to sayings? We come by it honestly & it (successfully!) convinces my relatives that we're really related to a Founding Father & pioneer, despite the shock (😂) It was literally coined in 1787. Uncle Ben designed the Fugio cent, the first official coin of the United States, with a rising sun (love reuniting with our JETRO - Japan External Trade Organization ecosystem friends here 🤓👋🏾) a sundial, and two words stamped across the bottom: Mind Your Business. Time flies, so mind yours. Shout to Uncle Ben for creating the sign we still keep tapping. As World Cup fever kicked off in Seattle over the weekend, Seattle’s inaugural Deep Tech Week wound down with its final event, the Deep Tech Hero Awards. I was proud, surprised, and humbled to accept the Hometown Hero award! I think my face says it all. It was a wonderful evening in the company of Founders and Seattle Deep Tech Community Leaders, and I enjoyed learning more about the meaningful innovation being cooked up in my adopted hometown 😀 I was also delighted to present Sierra C, MS with the Catalyst award. In less than one year she has catalyzed so much action and impact on Seattle’s Deep Tech scene, from Space to Quantum. So well deserved 👏 A big thanks to Paul Sevilla and his team for curating such a beautiful evening.
