After years of living with sarcoidosis, Claude Blue of Beaufort, South Carolina, was referred to MUSC Health's lung transplant program in 2023. As his disease progressed, he underwent evaluation and was added to the transplant waitlist in April 2025. Six months later, he received a life-saving double-lung transplant performed by Dr. Walker Blanding. Claude's recovery included significant challenges, including a tracheostomy and feeding tube. Through exceptional multidisciplinary care and his own determination, he worked alongside physical and occupational therapists until he walked out of the hospital under his own power four months later. Now, nine months post-transplant, Claude is enjoying time with his family and embracing life with renewed strength. He recently marked the milestone by ringing the transplant bell, joined by his loved ones, Dr. Walker Blanding, members of the lung transplant team and transplant coordinators, nursing staff and the physical and occupational therapists who supported him throughout his recovery. The ceremony also paid tribute to his generous donor and their family. Recovery after stroke is about more than medical treatment. It requires resilience, collaboration and an experienced multidisciplinary care team. After suffering multiple strokes and spending six weeks in intensive care, Ted Mosier began rehabilitation at MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center. Through the expertise of physicians, nurses and physical, occupational and speech therapists, along with support from his family, Ted regained strength, balance and independence. A new study from MUSC demonstrates the potential of community partnerships to expand access to genomic screening across South Carolina. Published in JAMA Network Open, the research found that more than 50,000 adults have completed no-cost genetic screening through In Our DNA SC, a statewide research program that has reached participants in all 46 counties, including rural and medically underserved communities. The findings highlight how implementation science, community engagement and flexible testing options can help improve access to genetic screening and advance disease prevention. When Jack Rogers suffered a life-threatening brain injury while traveling internationally, physicians in the Dominican Republic performed lifesaving surgery that stabilized him for transport to MUSC Health. Here, Dr. Alejandro Spiotta and the multidisciplinary neurosurgery team continued his care, while friends, family and the community rallied to help bring him home. Sen. Lindsey Graham’s untimely passing represents a tremendous loss for our state. A devoted public servant whose four decades of service included the military, the South Carolina House, the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, Sen. Graham touched the lives of millions of constituents, and his warmth and wit turned thousands of those constituents into friends. Just as Sen. Graham fought every single day for South Carolina families, he was a fierce advocate for MUSC. He understood the positive impact that a person in his position could have on healthcare outcomes across the state he loved by working together with members of our team and others. Thanks to this partnership, MUSC patients, including our veterans, have benefited from trailblazing treatments and research funding for diseases that range from Alzheimer’s to cancer. MUSC could not have had a better partner than Sen. Graham, and we will miss him. Our thoughts are with Darline, the senator’s loyal staff and all of his loved ones.
