NASA Langley’s expertise and technology continue to shape the future of lunar exploration. The Langley‑developed Stereo Cameras for Lunar Plume-Surface Studies (SCALPSS) provides critical data needed to understand the effects of lunar landings on the lunar environment -- essential information as larger spacecraft touch down closer together. SCALPSS captured this first‑of‑its‑kind imagery during Firefly’s Blue Ghost Mission 1 last year, and it will return to the Moon on four commercial landers in 2028 as part of NASA’s Moon Base Program. Hampton Roads native Andre Douglas has just been announced as an Artemis III astronaut! Andre grew up in Chesapeake, Va., served in the U.S. Coast Guard, and holds multiple engineering degrees. He previously served as a backup and closeout crew member for NASA’s Artemis II mission. We are excited to celebrate his journey and support our 757 local! 🎉
Introducing Artemis III. Four astronauts. Three launches. Two dockings. One splashdown. In 2027, the Artemis III mission will practice docking the Orion spacecraft with two lunar landers in low Earth orbit. On future Artemis missions, landers will bring astronauts to the lunar surface. While Artemis III will not land on the Moon, it will test the complex capabilities we need to return humanity there — this time to stay. A proud moment for our teams at NASA Langley! 🎉 In collaboration with the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), we completed NASA’s first Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone flight with a research organ onboard — showing how drones could support faster, more reliable organ transport when it matters most. This flight demonstrated a critical capability for real-world medical transport: operating a drone when the pilot cannot directly see it, or beyond the pilot’s visual line of sight. BVLOS flight will enable drones to move organs quickly through congested areas, reach remote communities, and streamline the first and last miles of transport. This work highlights how NASA Langley’s technical expertise and unique facilities are opening the door to what the future of lifesaving medical transport could look like when every second counts. Wildland firefighters face extreme conditions on the front lines — and NASA is helping make that work safer. 🚒🔥 NASA Langley scientists with the agency's FireSense team developed low-cost thermal sensors for fire bulldozers, alerting operators when radiant heat reaches dangerous levels while also gathering critical on-the-ground data to better understand wildfire behavior. Developed in collaboration with the Alabama Forestry Commission, this innovation brings NASA expertise directly to those protecting our communities.
